How would you clean a whole carpet thoroughly?

After 2 years in our rented house, the carpet has become quite stained. Mainly soot, tea, wine etc. The house will be inspected after we leave and we may get charged cleaning fees.

To try and avoid this, how would you clean a carpet? What's the best way to go about it? Would you hire a cleaner? Or is there a way you can clean it yourself? A certain product to use?

you can get someone to do it
we were £40 (cash) for a big living room

or you can hire a carpet doctor from places like sainsburys or b&q

I was wondering how much it would be to hire someone. Prolly cheaper to do it yourself though. Will look at B&Q.

Tried scrubbing brush with bought stain remover and that didn't work.
