Do you have a towel management system?

Do you fold up the towels after they've been used and use them again?

And whilst hanging them up to dry, where do you put them? Let's say you've all had baths or showers and there are four towels? Do you really have enough space in the bathroom for them?

Do you keep to your own towels? Perhaps a colour coded system?

Do you share?

If reusing, how do you make sure towels get washed often enough? Do you literally just wait until they're smelly?!?

Just wondering how other people manage their towels.

yes we have different towels for each person (colour)
I change mine about once every 4 or 5 days and leave dp's to his own conscience (much less frequently IME)
ds is shocking at not wanting baths so hardly ever needs his changing

we hang the damp one in airing cupboard then refold if not being used the next day

Dropdeadfred · 11/07/2008 18:00

We all have own towels. We all have about three hand towels and three bath sheets each (plus spares for guests etc) They are all different colours.
They are washed twice a week.
each bathroom has different coloured hand towels. These are washed weekly.

Walnutshell · 11/07/2008 18:03

one day I will have a proper-sized grown-ups house and will also be able to say "each bathroom..."

mumonthenet · 11/07/2008 18:03

love this thread!

5 people in this house and three bathrooms.

usually end up with all the towels all over the place until its a good drying day and then have a washing binge.

I have tried to invent a towel management system but I keep forgetting what it is I decided on!

noddyholder · 11/07/2008 18:04

NO sharing here either Yuck!

We have not got to grips with towels in our house. DH likes to air them on the bedroom floor whereas I like to dump them in the washing basket. We have 100s of towels due to MIL's fondness for buying bargains.

DS gets his own towel. Interestingly DH does not hang DS's towel on the floor, but lovingly folds his PFB's towel after each use, remembering to deposit it in the washbasket. Maybe we do have a system, but one which applies only to PFBs?

bellavita · 11/07/2008 18:07

We all have our own large bath towel - colour coded which three of them hang over the bannister to dry and DH's hangs over the towel rail in the shower room.

There is a hand towel in the main bathroom for the boys to use for hands and face and one in the downstairs loo.

The smaller towels and face cloths get washed a few times a week due to more muck going on them rather than being washed away down the sink.

All bath towels and bath mats get washed once a week on a 90 degree wash.

We each have separate towels - the childrens ones have applique-type designs on so no danger of us using those! Ours are plain.

The childrens one hang on rails over their radiators to dry and ours go on the heated towel rail in the bathroom.

Theres also a towel heirarchy here:

  1. Guest towels (white and pristine, which they won't stay for long if DP gets his hands on them)
  2. Our towels
  3. Swimming/beach towels
  4. Towels for household things like drying the trampoline or cat
  5. Towels that are torn up for cleaning or decorating purposes

aww riven - look at it this way - more cleaning to be done, so really if you have only one bathroom, you should be having the last laugh

Lucycat · 11/07/2008 20:25

me too riven!

we have a system of sorts.
DS's have a towel each in use. they are used each night after the bath and then folded and hung back on the towel radiator.
we have a hand towel for shared use in each bathroom
in the ensuite DH and I have special towels they aren't transfered to the kids bathroom
after use they are also folded and re hung on the towel radiator. We have a hand towel each.

The towels are changed once a week.

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/07/2008 13:47

we have a bath towel each - changed once a week- dry on the radiator, ds's dries on a towel horse - hand towels changed every 2 days, bath mat once a week, ds's swimming towel is used once and washed.

jackdaggerette · 12/07/2008 17:34

Towel each, in different colours, washed weekly. They tend to end up getting hung up to dry over doors which I hate - I suppose I should make sure that doesn't happen in new house .

I use that Liz Earle Hot Cloth Polish cleanser which means there are always loads of muslin clothes/flannels hanging everywhere - those are changed aftr 2 uses.

widgypog · 13/07/2008 15:33

we all have a towel , keep mine in bathroom ontowel rail over rad after use, dd in her bedroom on rad, dh in ensuite on rad. wash once a week with bath mats when cleaning bathrooms. They never get smelly and if they get too wet I wash before and always after swimming.

RustyBear · 13/07/2008 15:40

My system is - if I can't find a towel, look on DD's floor....

palaver · 13/07/2008 15:43

I have just read this thread and have discovered that we have a system without realising it.

Our towels are colour coded and have their own place.
Mine is hung on the radiator after use, dh's is hung on the rail, both in en-suite.
Kids towels are colour coded and hung in the bathroom. After a bath/shower they are left to dry on the bannisters and replaced in the bathroom when dry.

Washed weekly.

JackieNo · 13/07/2008 15:48

We have a towel each - DH has 2 enormous bath sheets, I have a bath towel, and DD and DS each have one of those ones with a hood bit in the corner from when they were babies, that they still use. Get washed every week or so, or if they look particularly dirty. Have en suite, with heated towel rail (when the heating's on) and main bathroom with heated towel rail (which can be switched on even when the heating's off, though it takes ages to warm up). DH tends to dump his towels on the floor or on the bed, which drives me barmy (and he knows it). Mine lives on the towel rail, so do DH's (eventually). DCs' go on hooks on the back of the bathroom door.

littleducks · 13/07/2008 16:03

I have sets of towels, one white, one striped etc. comprising of two handtowels and two bath sheets which hang on rail in the bathroom.

Dh has one of each, me also. Mine on the right, dh the left, dd uses my handtowel is just washing her hnds a clean towel if having a bath. Ds has a clean towel for bath as is too small to wash hands.

wet towels hang on radiator, of dh hangs his on the bannister, as it 'makes it feel homely' aka is what mil does, except in her case on guest towel in bathroom all others on bannister so when we stay at hers she puts dh a towel on bannister (im still passing as a guest!) he washes hands then drips water over carpet in bathroom and hallway to dry his hands on allocated towel.

We have just one towel in the toilet which is changed regularly.

ChukkyPig · 13/07/2008 16:06

Crikey. I am unwitting towel sloven. The things you learn!

Ambi · 13/07/2008 16:13

I have some towel shelves with fresh white fluffy towels as you step out of the shower. I like to pretend we live in a fancy hotel! They go straight into the wash basket after use and usually wash whites every other day. We don't share.
