..what can he do to make it smell nice without resorting to vile plug-ins ? (male friendly scents would be good )

Open all windows as much as possible, clean well into the corners, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda onto the carpet and leave for a while then vaccum, and have pots of bicarb in every room. Could also try pots of vinegar. Do the soft furnishings need cleaning?

I don't think it has soft furnishings...he said it had been cleaned but had the air of rentedness about it !
