I mean, yes im old enough to have actual original (well 60s and 70s) tupperware and I now have lovely glass knes and i also have everything in between!

I have always done lid off but now im struggling with finding the exact lid

I may have too much but thats a problem for another day

Today it's lid on or off?

Riveting I know 🙄

Lid on if I’ve only got one or two shaped like that and it’s be hard to track the lids down.

Lid off when I’ve got a big stack of the same size and it’s easy to have stack of pots and stack of matching lids.

TheOlderIGetTheStayerIHome · 11/10/2026 09:55

Off. If you don’t use them for ages they smell fusty when you open them if you store lid on ime.
Im pretty ruthless though, as soon as a lid cracks I throw the tub it fitted away. I do still have loads, but I store the tub types stacked side by side, and the matching lids, on edge, next to them.

Wish44 · 11/10/2026 10:20

Off - smell otherwise.

tupperware storage is a never ending, unsolvable problem.

Janefx40 · 11/10/2026 10:23

Yes because otherwise I can never find the lid. They don’t smell I don’t think!! I do store cake tins with the lid off if I have washed them until I’m sure they’re totally dry

Samewrinklesnewname · 11/10/2026 10:26

Lid on, but not fully sealed so there’s air flow…and yep genuine 1960s Tupperware here too so many random shapes and sizes 🤣

Yetone · 11/10/2026 10:29

Apart from a couple of pieces, all mine are nested so yes, I do store them with their lids on. I have 3 nested sets, I of which goes from small to very large. It does solve the problem of storage. I haven’t noticed any musty smell but they are only a few years old and I wash them in the dishwasher and dry thoroughly.

ShhhYouDontKnowMe · 11/10/2026 10:29

I’ve swapped all ours for a handful of glass ones so lids are in a basket in the same cupboard as where the glass containers are stacked. The Ikea ones we bought have different coloured lids depending on which pot you use so easy to match up.

lottiegarbanzo · 11/10/2026 10:31

Off but we have lots the same. Pile of boxes, pile of lids. Simple. The ‘odd’ ones are stored sitting on top of their lids.

Nourishinghandcream · 11/10/2026 10:41

Off.

Boxes are stacked in two piles with small at the top, getting progressively larger towards the bottom (space saver).
All lids are in a separate, adjacent pile.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 11/10/2026 11:13

I used to keep the lids off mine, so that I could stack the boxes. However, the angst at trying to match up the right lid to the right box drove me mad, so I have since converted to Pyrex, and they're all the same size!

BaronessBomburst · 11/10/2026 12:11

Lids off, with the lids stored in the largest container on their sides like a magazine rack. The box just lifts out and it's easy to grab the appropriate lid.

This

Only sane solution to dealing with it

KatyMac · 11/10/2026 22:02

It's just shit isnt it ive been looking at these but they are a) just more plastic and b) ours are in a drawer so it wouldn't work

Thinking about separating out big ones for cakes/batch cooking and smaller leftoves & packed lunch stuff and keeping them separate

Does anyone number them?

Naaah. That's just overkill!

DillyDeclutter · 12/10/2026 19:17

Lids on here but I've become very careful about washing and drying thoroughly and only putting away once completely dry.

Youcantrustchocolate · 12/10/2026 19:19

Ex Tupperware rep here. You should always store with lid off, otherwise the air in them goes stale.

Seasidewalker · 14/10/2026 20:18

I'm not convinced that they do smell stale, it sounds a bit like something someone came up with and we've all followed it for years!

Lids on here but we have culled down to a sensible number. The stack of containers from the Chinese that we use for batch freezing stack without lids as they at all the same.

mathanxiety · 15/10/2026 01:43

On - too hard to find lids if off. No smell issues.

AngelDog · 15/10/2026 01:45

Off or it gets smelly.

Bjorkdidit · 15/10/2026 04:17

We have a special 'tupperware' (because we've never owned actual branded tupperware, they're a mix of old takeaway containers, clippy tubs, pound shop specials and my favourite, those purchased from Mercadona in Spain, which are really good) drawer that's half a kitchen base unit.

The tubs go in the main drawer and there's a separate shallow drawer in a drawer underneath the worktop where the lids go. Makes finding the right lid a little easier but the reality is that we have far more than we ever need and I'm not sure how we ended up with so many as we rarely intentionally buy a lot of them, but they just seem to fill the drawer. And there's at least one tub that I would use a lot but I haven't seen the lid for what seems like months, but I know that as soon as I put it in the recycling, the lid will reappear the second the bin lorry rolls away.

HoraceCope · 15/10/2026 04:20

i used to but its all gone horribly wrong lately

BertieBotts · 16/10/2026 14:07

On. If they smell, they haven't been washed and dried properly.

However, I can say this because we have the space to store them like this now. In our old kitchen it was much smaller and my rule there was to be ruthless about having one kind only so everything was compatible, no non-matching lids.

BertieBotts · 16/10/2026 14:09

Surely if the air goes stale, you can just wave it around a bit and the "stale" air will be replaced with new air from the room. I don't think stale air will be an issue.

SatinHeart · 16/10/2026 14:14

No, they go stinky if you leave the lids on. I have boxes from Joseph Joseph that nest, so one stack of boxes and another stack of lids. The box and lid are colour coded to help match them up.

I have an oblong nesting set from Joseph Joseph. I store them with the lids on. I wash them in the dishwasher so any previous food smells are removed. I then dry them throughly. They do not smell. If they did I would throw them away and buy a new set.
