Advice on cleaning a wheelie bin after a catheter bag was binned

Some advice please, i am caring for my parents, my step father has a catheter and a bag, the carers come everyday to empty the bag, they usually poor the contents down the loo, but today on my way to work i noticed liquid in the bottom of the wheelie bin and very strong smell of urine, so they must have thrown the whole bag in there.

When I get home I will have to sort it out, i thought put bleach to deal with the smell and tip it out and then soapy water, put cat litter in to soak up the liquid but that might just stick to the bottom, newspaper, but that might be hard to get out, we could get in one of those companies that do bin cleaning i guess, maybe that is the best option as I don't fancy reaching in to the bin to clean it and it's quite a large wheelie bin.

thank you.

I would tip it out first, then put in bleach and hot water (not too hot), and give it a good swill round, then rinse it out. If there is still a smell, repeat the bleach and hot water, and rinsing again.

Probably bleach and very hot water then drain the bin?? Also can you get a medical waste bin for the catheter bags. Or the carers should be double bagging in plastic rubbish bags once itd been emptied

bleach and hot water - I clean my wheelie bin using a mop so I don’t have to get in it. Drain it by keeping it upside down then put upright with the lid up. Put a note on the bin - that’s disgusting!!

Thanks for the replies, I cleaned yesterday evening, not a nice job, i was sick what with all the soaked gloves, tubes and bags and inch of urine at the bottom of the bin, put bleach and hot water, smells much better, will have to do again or get professionally cleaned, my step father is going to call the agency, it was a real health hazard as he had an infection etc, can't think what they were doing just throwing the stuff in the bin, we would have been sick if we had not noticed for a few days or hot weather.

You can get specific disposable bags for this, i would contact whoever is supplying his supplies and ask for some he can get them on prescription, his carers shouldn't be throwing them unbagged and full. in the bin, if it happens again cat litter in the bin will clump up and soak up so it doesn't run everywhere, and get onto the care company too.

Complain to the care company for sure. The carers were pouring my mum’s down the kitchen sink which was bad enough!

Bleach works better with cool or cold water

I would have contacted the care agency and got them to clean it.
