Anyone bought a dishwasher recently?

Bought a new dishwasher. Very surprised at how light it is. Are they all like this now? It is the same well known brand as my old one. I have to push it back slightly after opening the door, every time.

We replaced ours recently but it’s integrated so I don’t know how much it weighs and it’s fixed in place.
As far as I know there’s no particular reason for a dishwasher to be heavy, it’s not like a washing machine which needs a heavy base to keep it stable during spinning.

Not a dishwasher but a clothes washing machine. Depending on how old
your previous appliance was it’s likely metal parts have been replaced by plastic parts. This is very common industry wide with all appliances. It may look the same be called the same and have similar model number but parts have been substituted. As a consumer there is no way to know this or even avoid it in many brands. My washing machine is lighter but so far working silently and beautifully.

I had not thought about parts possibly being plastic.
I wish the washing machine was lighter. It’s in a very tight spot and no chance of cleaning around it.
I was wondering about the dishwasher because it has to be moved back very slightly every time you open the door.

I just looked at mine. It seems pretty much the same except the bottom part is now plastic rather than metal.

We just bought a new one. It is integrated and doesn’t seem light, but the drawers feel flimsy compared to the old one, and the racks in the drawers are spectacularly wrong. It is impossible to load normal things into the bottom rack, so we’ve bodged the old rack in to the new machine.

My advice to anyone buying a new washing machine is to go somewhere and see the racks for yourselves. If you can take a plate and a couple of bowls with you, then all the better!

We bought ours last year and haven’t experienced it moving. A washing machine I could understand since it spins with a lot of force nice surely a dishwasher doesn’t get up to such speeds to move? Is it washing properly?

Noironing · 18/09/2026 14:19

It only moves when you open the door. Not forcefully IMO just the slight tug you would normally have to give. It moves a tiny amount each time but is close fitting so you do need to nudge it back. It is washing fine. agree about washing machine.

good advice about dishwasher racks. Last year we bought a dinner set but they have a curve and so take up too much space which is still annoying me.

Is it fitted under a kitchen counter, or totally freestanding? The under counter ones generally have holes on the sides to screw it into the cabinet beside. And sometimes holes on top to screw it into the countertop. The other thing you are meant to do is use the levelling feet to brace the entire thing against the countertop, to keep it stable when you open and close the door. I tried to do this with ours but because we have an Ikea kitchen the countertops are too high for it to actually work. I'm still deciding what to do about that - I might lower it down and put a piece of wood in the gap to give it something to brace against and screw into, because although ours isn't going anywhere, it does definitely move slightly when you open and close the door.

It's not that the unit itself is light, it's that dishwasher doors are incredibly heavy, especially if they have a cabinet-matching front on them (but even when they don't). You don't feel the weight of it because the springs counteract this, but having had an old one where the spring broke, the weight of the door is often enough to counterbalance the entire machine.

But yes for this reason part of installing an underbuilt appliance is securing it within the kitchen unit. I would guess that either your old machine was totally freestanding and just fit under the counter (so had the stability built into the design) or it was properly braced/screwed in to the kitchen counter and units.

Noironing · 18/09/2026 19:16

It is freestanding. I am surprised it is so light as I could never move our old one it felt heavier than the washing machine. You are right about doors being heavy. If I did not nudge it back I have a feeling that after a week it could be a good 2 inches forward. Our worktops leave quite a gap but not the sides. I can pull this machine right out and push it back like I was moving a suitcase about, so I was wondering if they are all very light now.

I think washing machines have concrete in them to stop them moving across the floor?

rwalker · 18/09/2026 19:43

Probably to do with what type of of feet the machine has rather than weight

BertieBotts · 18/09/2026 20:12

I think they probably are lighter as well. Thinking about it I was thinking that both our current one and the one we replaced were light. But the one we replaced was only 2 years old. Previous one was probably from 2013ish and was much heavier.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2026 03:11

I've just got a brand new Bosch one, compared to all the grunting when the delivery men brought in my new washer they positively skipped in with the dishwasher.

Noironing · 21/09/2026 13:43

Exactly this! I have no excuse not to pull it out and clean all round it when necessary. Might it not be a good idea for the connections? so maybe that’s my excuse!

YY definitely no good to disturb the connections Grin
