How often do you replace your pillows? Or your duvet?

I throw them out if they look grubby. Should I replace them more often? I kero duvets until the filling starts to go lumpy. Or until one if the kids pee or puke on it!

Don't you wash them?

Needsomethingtoread · 13/09/2026 15:59

Had mine years. Just take them to the big washing and drying machines every couple of months and use pillowcase protectors on my pillows.

I wash duvets regularly, probably two or three times a season. I don't replace them unless there is an issue with them, I've got 20 year old duvets.

Pillows have protectors on which are washed regularly, I used to wash pillows but modern ones don't seem to wash well so I've started replacing pillows every 18 months or so.

Every year

My duvets cost a few hundred £. I’m not planning on changing them. 😂

My last one was ten years old (wool) and i only got a new one because we upgraded from a double to a king size bed. Dd has my old double wool duvet and it’s still going strong.

My pillows (the only type I can stand) go flat after about eight months, so I replace them then, but I wash the pillow protectors every couple of weeks (and the pillow cases every week).

Duvets I hang outside when I change the bedding but I only replace them if there's a dreadful accident (dog, I am looking at you) or if they become too flat, but they usually last a good few years.

My very expensive tempur pillow is about 10 years old and looks like new. No way I’m getting rid of that as it’s very comfie. Duvets last about 10 years I think. I don’t wash them very often, just put them out to air. I really dislike disposing of things for the sake of it when they’re still serviceable.

Had my duvet 10 years. It’s fine. How do they get grubby ? Mine has a cover on it. Although no small children near it.

Mydogisagentleman · 13/09/2026 16:33

We have many single duvets - probably 8-10 as we each have one.
Probably half are feather which have been replaced by synthetic when I was told of the cruelty involved. Single the synthetic ones are so light, they get washed annually.
Pillows are replaced every 6 weeks or so. I am a really restless sleeper and constantly turning them makes them look like Swiss rolls.

My pillow is a dunlopillo latex and about 9 years old, cost about 90 quid but so worth it. I never wash it as latex resists dustmites and I have 4 washable layers on top - the removable cotton case it comes in, a pillow protector, an underneath pillowcase and the top pillowcase. I don't anticipate buying a new one for several more years.

I wash duvets once a season, I have varying togs from 1 to 9, all wash in my normal size domestic machine and dry in the tumble dryer. I last bought a duvet about 5 years ago when my cat shat on the bed and I had to bin the bedding. Otherwise I keep them for many years. I do buy decent ones which aren't cheap though.

I've had one duvet since I went to university in 1991. I wash it yearly. Some of our pillows are really old (I got them from my grandma's house) but have protectors on as well as pillow cases. The protectors get washed every couple of months.

Myhipmyhipmyhip · 13/09/2026 21:44

I occasionally wash the duvets but find they go weird and lumpy. I just replace them once this happens.

Pillows don't seem to wash well. I use pillow protectors and hang the pillows out occasionally to air
