Washing Machine HELP! Washed Something That Was Not Washable

I washed a darkish multi colour chenille throw in the machine. I took a chance. Lost. It shrunk. However the worst was yet to come.
There were bits everywhere. Cleaned them up.
I put the next wash on. It was some microfibre cloths with a hand towel and 2 face cloths.
The towel and face cloths are for the bin. They are blue grey now and covered with little flecks of fibre. The microfibre cloths might be going there too.
They are unchanged colour wise but have fluffy flecks of fibre at the edges.
I thought I might try hoovering them.

I cleaned the machine out again.
I left it overnight to dry out more and wiped and hoovered the drum and the rubber door seal.

I put on another wash with old towels and a colour catcher sheet. They still did not come out well.
Still discoloured and traces of little bits.

Any advice would be welcome ?
Is my washing machine goosed?

Have you cleaned out the filter? The little thing at the front where you open it and unscrew it? That might help.

WonderingAboutThus · 15/08/2026 13:18

Did you clean all the filters and bits of the washing machine?

Sounds like a nightmare!

Lomonald · 15/08/2026 13:22

Does your machine have a "tub clean" function? If so run that see if it helps if it doesn't have the function run your machine empty on a 60 .

Aah the old chenille in the washing machine saga. Got bitten once, would never buy again for the reason you’ve described. Absolutely shredded. Lesson learned x

AnneKipankitoo · 15/08/2026 13:28

No. No “clean” function. The instructions say a 90 wash to clean though so I might try that.
I forgot to say I did do an empty wash at 60 too.

Clean out the filter as someone else suggested and just do a few more empty washes to see if that helps.

You can also get a product called Vamoosh that helps get rid of pet hair that might help if cleaning the filter and doing a few more washes doesn’t get rid of the issue.

Thank you @Peridot1 . Not done the filter yet @BillieWiper , and @WonderingAboutThus .

Doing the filter is such a pain. I will do it though.

It was a pain on my old machine too. I once opened it and this massive purple thing came out increasing in size. It was a latex free glove I had used in the garden and left it in a pocket. Filled up like a water balloon.

You might need to do it to flush it all through . What a nightmare though.

Years ago I washed a pashmina i m not sure why anyway it was a disaster zone but just kept doing empty washes till it cleared

flapjackfairy · 15/08/2026 14:25

tumble dry everything. All the bits will be in the filter afterwards. Works brilliantly even when you leave a tissue in the wash by mistake .

flapjackfairy · 15/08/2026 14:26

sorry ignore that. I thought you had bits on the washing

AnneKipankitoo · 15/08/2026 14:51

At least it was not husband’s shirts or cycling gear. He is away so taking opportunity to do a thorough clean.
Filter done.

Took the towels out( washed at 90 this time) . The colour catcher was not as stained. Some little bits but going to put in the dryer now.

The bits are very annoying but it was the dyeing of things too!
I really did not need to create more work for myself.
I need the machine to be operational soon as he is coming back from a trip and will have lots of washing.

Crikey that sounds mad! Hopefully this time it won't be too bad. I hope it rectifies itself soon!

Just put the two scrappy towels through the tumble dryer. Cannot believe the amount of fluff.
About to check the filter again after another empty wash finished.
This is definitely a never again situation !

10 pm last night. No fluff or bits evident in the rubber door seal. The scrappy towels are in the dryer now.
Fingers crossed.
I had to bin the microfibre cloths. Absolutely covered in the fluff.
