Asda the cheapest?

Ok, there is a story in the papers today that say that Asda are the cheapest supermarket. Do people think thats correct or are Aldi/Lidl cheaper still?

Depends what for. I used to shop at both but would say that Asda probably works out cheaper for a weekly shop and there is much more choice. It doesn depend whether you will be buying brand names, stores own or the smart price stuff though.

Yes Asda are waaay cheaper. I always shop there.

I think it depends on what you buy. Personally, for my shopping, tesco work out at the same price or a bit cheaper. I don't buy any branded goods.

oh ok, I didn't realise that they didn't include Aldi/Lidl.

I swap between asda and tesco and can't really say I've noticed much difference between the two. Bills seem to be about the same in both imo.

asda seem to have 'nicer' things. For some reason I've always hated tesco. Their range of fresh things is shite.

I think it very much depends on the store, the asda where my friend lives is rubbish..always empty shelves and not very clean. Her Tesco is a new store and lovely. I was talking abot cost rather than availability...where I live there much of a muchness. Somethings are better in Asda others in Tesco

I like Morrisons but again it depends on which store you go to and mine is lovely!

did a full weeks shop today (without meat which I get from the butcher) for £35!!!!!!

It only compares ones that deliver, I think, but mysupermarket.com is good for comparisons. Friend of mine found Ocado cheapest for her weekly shop a few times as depends what's on offer etc!

Tescos fruit and veg is the best - Sainsbury's seems limited and they often run out of basics - like milk! - Asda seems the cheapest - compared a few items from LIDL at ASDA, and ASDA came out cheaper. Our nearest store is Waitrose which I hate, and the Waitrose fruit and veg always seems to go mouldy by the next day.

there's no ASDA anywhere near us

I get more for my money at Asda and some products that Tesco dosen't sell too.

I have at least 20 super markets within a 12ish min drive and 8 of those are within a 5 min drive

they include the big 4, waitrose, Lidl and aldi

i think it depends what you buy

we have a brand new aldi down the road.... i was amazed by the selection and quality (and PRICE) of their fresh fruit and veg!

a whole punnet of delicouse sweet and juicy nectarines for 69p for example

im very close (almost net door) to a huge asda and i dont really get much from there at all and i do find several of their staff very rude, and have got a fair few formal warnings for being so extreamly rude

I think unless you by all value / smart price etc lidl / aldi would be cheeper, but i dont like any of their meet and wouldnt by anything with any meat / chicken ingrediants from there full stop

I also have 2 waitroses within a 5 min drive and imo they are NOT more expensive, and if you bought a trolley of branded goods, ie heinz beans, fairy liquid, kelloggs corn flakes etc etc i think you would find the cost exactly the same as on all most branded good they price match the spermakets.

on their own brands you DO pay a little more but when you look at the ingrediants lables you see why.... no manky EU pork in waitrose ham etc
you pay a bit more because you are buying better quality food more ethically sourced (which IMo is worth paying for_

Last time i went shopping i went to aldi for fresh fruit and veg, olive oil, and fruit juice and waitrose for the rest!

I get a monthly shop delivered from Asda for staples, then buy perishables such as fruit and veg weekly from various other supermarkets/shops.
I find that other supermarkets have cheaper offers, but overall are not cheaper on other basics, such as tinned tuna or tomatoes.
On general own brand Asda are a bit cheaper and on smartprice stuff they are quite a bit cheaper.
Lidl's cheapest sliced brown loaf is 58p at the moment, and it's dry as a bone, whereas Asda smartprice, slice wholemeal loaf is about 28p, and is a bit limp, but not dry.
I don't find Lidl's particularly cheap, apart from sweeties, but they do have cheap fruit and veg every so often (like now), but when they don't reduce their fruit and veg it costs more than Tesco's (apples, bananas).
We don't have an Aldi in this area, so not sure about that.

We used to live near a big Asda hypermarket and found the choice and value the best. Where we have moved to the Asda is smaller, so the range isn't as good. We shop in lidl's for most basics which does work out cheaper for us then get anything we can't pick up in lidl's at Asda or Tesco.
