How to label rugby socks?

Exciting thread!

Any bright ideas how to label dark navy blue rugby socks? I worry sewn on name tapes will restrict the stretch, itch or get yanked off.

I have woven name tapes and a name stamp but as they are so dark the ink won’t show.

If you are any good at sewing, how about embroidered initials in another colour thread?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 10/08/2026 12:57

Don’t.

named or not, they won’t come back to you. Just buy a stash

muddyford · 10/08/2026 12:59

Can you fold the woven tag end to end then sew the double open end to the top thread of the sock?

7catsisnotenough · 10/08/2026 12:59

I used to sew tapes onto the bottom of the toe area, awkward to do but they stayed on and didn't rub!

BlueBlueCowWondering · 12/08/2026 06:02

I sewed only the ends of the name tapes to allow for stretch, not all the way around. Right at the top of the sick as they get folded over so it doesn't show. But rugby socks are scrunched down unlike football socks over shin pads so not much will show through anyway

Twilightstarbright · 12/08/2026 07:34

Thanks all! Going to try sewing just the ends not the whole tape on and also embroider some initials on although I suspect the school will moan about that 🙄

Why do they need naming? Big school
items like jumpers and trousers I understand, but socks? Do you label all
socks or just rugby socks?

if I had to do it, I’d use sew in ones at the top where they get folded over, but tbh it’s never crossed my mind to label a single sock

Twilightstarbright · 12/08/2026 10:44

@Muchtoomuchtodo because they’re £8 a pair and DS loses things very easily (poor executive function and dyspraxia so we are working with him on this) and if things are labelled they’re far more likely to come back.

Sew them down the length of the sock, rather than around it. Far less restricting.

Both my DCs had to have visible name tapes on all their sports kit - including socks.

Does anyone check?

our school asked for everything to be named, but I drew the line at socks!!

I used to do this, or sew the name tape onto the sole.

welshweasel · 12/08/2026 21:53

I fold the name tape in half and sew to the top of the sock

Twilightstarbright · 13/08/2026 08:16

@Muchtoomuchtodo its not so much about people checking (although our school does) it’s more if it’s named I have a greater chance of the sock coming back to me. We have to have specific school branded rugby socks which are £8 a pair and DS can easily lose a pair a week.

Ah, I see @Twilightstarbright

it doesn’t work like that at our school. All lost property is in one room in piles of coats, jumpers etc and it’s up to the kids to rummage through to try to find anything they’ve lost. It’s not the most effective!

Twilightstarbright · 13/08/2026 11:11

@Muchtoomuchtodo we have a similar pile at ours but at least if it’s named then it does have a better chance of getting back to you.

I have a friend who is a teacher and regularly gets parents demanding she finds their DC’s jumper. The unnamed jumper that looks the same as everyone else’s!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/08/2026 11:31

I name everything else but not socks. Our teachers just send the kids to the room of doom to look! Nobody seems brave enough to delve into the sock pile!

LadyLapsang · 15/08/2026 21:19

Just sew it lengthwise, all round. When DC was at school, a long time ago now, they used to choose a few pupils and check their kit for name tags on the first day of term. You never knew if it would be your child. Everything was labelled, including shoes.

This is what I have done.

I fold the name tape in half and sew to the top of the sock

This is what my mum did when all PE kit had to be labelled on the outside of the individual item.
