How to keep flies away from my wheelie bin?

I’m having a nightmare in this hot weather with flies around the wheelie bin.

Can anyone recommend something that I can use to keep them away? Are there any sprays that work?

The bin itself is fine, I get it cleaned when it’s emptied I just want to stop the flies congregating around it!

Don’t know about keeping flies away. We use insect surface spray all over exterior and interior of lid and all around outside and inside edges at top to stop the maggots. We need to spray it 3 times a week except in winter to stop them, not sure whether flies just don’t lay eggs on the sprayed surface or whether they do but they die immediately they hatch. There are still actual flies though, and that’s no matter how much we double bag everything. We are in a hot country, everyone has the same issue here.

There must be a reason they are attracted to it.
Possibly residue liquid from food you have put in there that they can detect.
I’d give it a good clean on the outside with some disinfectant and a stiff brush and see if that deters them.

We get this at our food waste wheely bin. I spray fly spray in and around the edges to kill them. Doesnt stop them turning up though

Is there any chance that ‘bin juice’ 🤮 has seeped onto the surface where the bins sit, either accidentally or from when they’ve been cleaned?
Throw a bucket of mixed Jeyes or disinfectant down around there.

Sit on it, armed with a JML pest reject racket.

Alternatively, move your wheelie bin away from your door.

Don’t put anything that’s not been rinsed into your bins!

I quickly rinse most containers, plastic trays especially meat & fish, anything pungent, tins etc.

Everything in my separate food waste bin is bagged.
Everything in my plastics and tins bag is rinsed.
Everything in my soft plastics bin is rinsed if it’s touched food like the cover on coleslaw, cottage cheese or the pull-back soft plastic on meat.

With vigilance, regularly washed out bins after collection day and fly spray to hand, I rarely get maggots.

My food waste is double bagged in compostable bags. Unfortunately our food waste is only collected every 2 weeks so in the summer we can get maggots if its warm. The food waste bins always smell a bit ripe by the time they are due to be emptied

Thanks everyone. I’ll disinfect the outside of the bin and the area around it in case there’s something on there. They’re up against the wall that divides my garden from next door and they let their dog wee on the other side of the wall so I don’t think that helps 🙄.

I have a spray bottle with mix bleach / water that works i spray it when i open the bin , around the bin when i close it and repeat everytime its opened. They stay away as long as the bleach doesn't dry out. We still get flies but no more maggots , and we got a neon zapper thing that if they do come in the door they get a zap

We do this too. Everything is rinsed before putting in the bins

I clean my bins with hot soapy water and disinfectant each time they are emptied. I then make sure they are completely dry before using them. I rinse anything I can before it goes in there. I double bag anything for the refuse, for recycling I try to make packages (fill a strong back or box with other recycling). If it’s really hot I will do a run to the tip for the black bag (especially if it has something like fishy smelling in it) and we are a way off collection.

We suffer from this and the only way I have found is to pressure wash the bins regularly in Summer.

So long as the bin is clean, why worry about it? Flies gonna fly. They have to be somewhere.

I've been using the supermarket version of dettol to clean my bins and have noticed fewer flies, I don't think they like the antiseptic smell. Also been using a wheelie bin liner during the heatwave to try to minimise bin juices.

I wrry about it because my bin storage area is quite near the front door and before I enforced monthly bin pressure washes the little fuckers would dive bomb in the house the minute anyone opened the door from about May to October. It's really fcking annoying (never mind the hygiene) when they start agrily buzzing around bouncing off wall in the living room just as you are sitting down with a cup of tea and they're a bugger to get out. Or if you kill them you've then got to dispose of the corpse, which puts me off my bsicuits.

I am going to mandate adding some jeyes to the bottom of the bin once it's been ceaned, thats a good idea.

Have you seen that hack where you put dry coffee grounds in a tin and set fire to them, blow out the embers and leave the smoking pot near your bins?

Works well - unfortunately I was so excited I skipped the end of the video (where it said only to do it outside) and put the tin near the inside food waste bin. Entire house smelt like a smoking shelter - but no flies anywhere.

Simply, bagging the waste to stop access/smells. Ensuring bin and area is clean of waste residue.

The spray they use after washing the bin may be attracting flies. It’s so highly fragranced. My bin is washed out with a bucket of hot soapy water and a soft broom. No fly problem.
