How can I remove a lingering urine smell from tiled flooring?

I have a tiled floor in my downstairs toilet .
Despite mopping it well I can’t get rid of the lingering smell of wee .
Ive even tried using one that is designed for pet stains / smells . Scrubbing between the grout with a brush .
Anyone got other suggestions ?

Shaving foam is meant to be good for this. Spray it all over the floor and leave for 10 mins.

This. Pour it on the stinkiest bits neat and leave it for at least an hour. You might need to repeat a few times. We had an elderly, incontinent terrier, and this was the only thing that worked.

I'd try bicarb of soda. Sprinkle a big box over the whole floor, leave as long as you can (I'd probably do 3 days) then hoover up.

Lingering how did it get there in the first place? A dog or a man?

Id personally use a lemon kitchen cleaner and lemon floor wipes followed by a bucket of very hot detol / bleach mix and mop. Once it’s gone it’s gone it won’t smell. Clean the bathrooms well minimum once a week.

Unless a dog is in there (my mums elderly dog if it managed to get in the toilet would pee around the toilet once or twice every year) or it’s a man not hitting to toilet. Work out why first - clean - it won’t smell if you keep up to cleaning it. I don’t have urine smell in my toilet and 3 boys here and tiled bathrooms. Any chance of the seals broken or old.

Defo a reason so you just need to figure it out. Hopefully you don’t use the horrible carpets mats to go around the toilet 🤣 as it could be them that is smelling.
Good luck

White vinegar. Spray it all over neat, come back in a couple of hours and wipe it up. It completely gets rid of all urine odours.

However...it would be unusual for a tiled floor to hold a smell, unless it's not sealed or grouted properly and it's gone through. I'd also focus on other areas, skirting, walls etc, in case it's not the floor smelling.

Lexibletheflexible · 20/07/2026 06:00

Yes id bet it is the walls, base of the toilet or the skirting boards that smell.

WonderingWanda · 20/07/2026 07:09

It's likely that it's soaked through the grout and into the subfloor so you will need to saturate it with the enzyme cleaner so that can seep down as well.

localnotail · 20/07/2026 07:20

I used rubbing alcohol to get rid of enzymes from cat piss. But I agree with the poster above - it is probably soaked through the grout into whatever is below the tiles.

Enzyme cleaner. Huge spray bottle from Amazon is £9.
