How often do you clean stuff? (help me show my sis what normal people are like)....

This is following on from a "discussion" with my childless sis.

She lived with me and my dh a few years back and didnt hold back in her opinions on our cleanliness. Now I admit pre children we where fairly slovenly - only cleaning when things began to smell. But now I clean regularly and the house is not immaculate but it is clean and fairly tidy.

Now she is saying that I dont clean things often enough and that as a SAHM now I should be able to keep the house a bit cleaner. (I did refrain from hitting her at this point - which wasnt easy).

Anyway I wondered whether my fellow mumsnetters would let me know how often they do the various jobs around the house to see if I am actually lazy or not. So this is what I do and I would like to know how it compares to everybody else.

Hoover - downstairs daily, whole house once a week.
Mop Kitchen - once a week.
Dust - once a week. Bedrooms done fortnightly.
Bathrooms - Cleaned once a week - toilets done more often when needed.
Sofa hoovered weekly.
Under beds - never hoovered - once in a blue moon
Fridge cleaned every few months
Oven - cleaned once a year
Kitchen cupboards - not cleaned yet since we moved here a year ago
Beds changed every two weeks.
Wasing up done after each meal and kitchen surfaces cleaned and wiped.

well, you do a lot of things more often than I do, sounds perfectly well within the reals of cleanliness tbh.

I would do the kitchen stuff more often, cleaning fridge and cupboards ans oven etc., but I rarly dust the house.

Tell your sis to piss off, or clean it herself if she has the cheak to complain about it.

ComeOVeneer · 25/06/2008 10:12

Hoover - whole house daily.
Mop Kitchen - daily.
Dust -whole house 2-3 times a week.
Bathrooms - Cleaned 2-3 a week.
Sofa hoovered weekly.
Under beds - once a week our room, once a month childrens
Fridge cleaned every week
Oven - cleaned once a month
Kitchen cupboards - 3-4 times a year
Beds changed every week.
Washing up(stacked in dishwasher) done after each meal and kitchen surfaces cleaned and wiped.

But then I have a husband with psoriasis, 2 black and white cats, a very mucky 3 yr old ds and I am anal.

WinkyWinkola · 25/06/2008 10:12

You sound very clean to me.

Your SIL should mind her own business. If she's got time to criticise your housekeeping, then she's not done enough work on her own home. Tell her to buzz off.

Hoover - Usually once every 2 days or so downstairs (daily if DS3 makes a particularly bad mess), upstairs.......ermm I there's no floor space to hoover at the moment as I'm in the process of redecorating - so it's been about 4/5 weeks since it last went upstairs

Mop Kitchen - - not often enough - but they're dark red quarry stone tiles so don't show up the dirt - I do hoover/sweep in there regularly though

Dust - downstairs, probably once a week, upstairs.....ermm dust?? Probably will also be once a week once I've got sorted up there.

Bathrooms - not often enough, but probably the same as you

Sofa - never hoovered, it's (cheap) leather - gone beyond the point of even bothering to clean it too as it's so old

Under beds - never hoovered - once in a blue moon blush - same as you lol

Fridge - try to clean it every time I do a big online shop, so every couple of weeks.

Oven - can't remember last time I cleaned it, it's old and crap (inherited from last owners) and as long as the grill pan is clean (which it is) I can't be arsed faffing with it.

Kitchen cupboards - about once a year

Beds - about the same as you
Washing up - put the dishwasher on daily, or every other day if I've done something that doesn't use many pots for dinner. Worktops (usually) wipes down properly every night.

RubberDuck · 25/06/2008 10:16

Good god, you sound good!

Hoover - once a week or if particularly crumby (and then only the crumby area).
Mop Kitchen - twice a week (gets very scummy otherwise as it's a through route for the garden)
Dust - quick once a week, more thoroughly about once a month
Bathrooms - once a week but more thoroughly about once a month
Sofa - you clean your sofa?!! Oh okay, I do throw the covers in the wash when they're looking particularly vile - maybe 2-3 times a year?
Under beds - hahahahahahaha
Fridge - I chuck stuff out when they get furry, does that count?
Oven - ovenclean get booked every January
Kitchen cupboards - only if I spill something or they look grotty
Beds - changed fortnightly
Washing up - have dishwasher but also wash a few stuff by hand - surfaces get wiped with soapy water once a day, cleaned properly with bleach spray thing once a week.

I think you're doing well, tbh.

Thanks everyone - sound like I am not that odd.

Blimey ComeOveneer thats impressive - I shall aspire to be like you

I am going to print this thread out and use it as evidence.

Its my sister WinkyWinkola so I might be a little more pointed than just telling her to buzz off.

Well I am really pleased now I am obvioulsy not that slovenly - thanks everyone.

I can't help it I loathe mess/dirt (to the point of obsession) and as I said with 2 blck and white cats shedding, dh's skin condition and an extremely mucky 3 year old (thank goodness my dd (6) takes more after me), I have to do at least that much to keep it at a level I don't get anxiety attacks over

micci25 · 25/06/2008 10:42

hoover downstairs... a few times a day but i have pets so i have to to keep on top of hairs, hoover under chairs weekly but my chairs must be different to others as you can 'see' under my chairs and its does my head in seeing all the crumbs under there, my nephew also has the habit of putting his hands under there and pulling out whatever he can find.
hoover stairs and upstairs once they look like they need doing..prob about once a fortnight
mop kitchen...daily
bathrooms cleaned properly (i.e. scrubbed and hoovered) once every two weeks but gets a quick rub down every few days, toilet gets cleaned if there are any, ahem, marks
under beds....i didnt know you could hoover under beds?
oven...top wiped down daily after use, inside cleaned about once a week
kitchen cupboards.. when they start looking grubby.. so probably about once every couple of months
fridge..weekly but only because dp has a paranoia about it otherwise once a fortnight
beds..ours changed weekly dcs fortnightly
washing up..same way you do it
dusting..dd1 does it whenever she has the urge so ususally once every few days.

stitch · 25/06/2008 10:43

all sounds normal.
i try to vacuum th ematresses about once a couple o fmonths, bt i dont vacuum the sofas more than once every three monthsish.
bedsheets are supposedly changed every week. mopping done twice a week, but not by me!

crokky · 25/06/2008 10:43

I do all your jobs less frequently than you, apart from vacuuming which I do every day (baby & toddler on floor so like to keep it clean).

JacobsPrincess · 25/06/2008 10:52

Crikey Lav, you sound like a domestic goddess to me!
Hoover - Carpet sweeper downstairs daily, whole house once a week.
Mop Kitchen - once a week, if it's lucky! Dark tiles hide a multitude of sins (and spills!).
Dust - once a week. Bedrooms done when I can be arsed.
Bathrooms - Cleaned once a week - toilets 3 times a week.
Sofa hoovered? You are having a laugh? The throw gets washed when you can't see it for toast crumbs.
Under beds - recently de-cluttered, so on a mission to keep clear.
Fridge cleaned every few months. Freezer recently defrosted - first time in 2 years.
Oven - cleaned once a year, when I can get someone else to do it (asthmatic, and the cleaning fumes set off my symptoms)
Kitchen cupboards - once a year
Beds changed every one to two weeks.
Kitchen surfaces cleaned and wiped twice a day.
Washing up done - when we run out of plates/pans

dylsmum1998 · 25/06/2008 11:28
