what can I put in my little green dustbin to get rid of the flies?

I use my little green dustbin a lot for fruit peelings, left over un-cooked veg, egg shells etc but hate opening it as i get a swarm of nasty flies all over me.

Should I be making myself clean it out every week?
Or is there something I can put inside to keep the flies away that doesn't then make the scraps no good for composting?

TIA

I will be watching this! I hate all the little flies thet come out as soon as the lid is opened. As soon as any food is in there they appear! Weekly food collection bin so i can't empty it more often.

They sound like fruit flies. Little tiny flies with orange/ red bellies??

Not much you can do about them as they are attracted to the smell of rotting fruit. They breed really fast too. Other than emptying out little green bin into compost heap regularly and washing the bin out every time you empty it there's not really much you can do.

add a layer of shredded or scrunched up paper or kitchen towel, or so the composting lady who came to ds' nursery told me when i asked about this very same problem

thanks flier, I'll try that. Means I will have to wash it out this time though huh?

I don't have my own compost heap Riojalover so can't empty any more than once a week when the recycle/compost lorry comes.
