Odd request, how to make an old penny shine again?

That's right, I've collected 7 pennies from 2001 to 2007 (it's an anniversary gift) and would like to make them shiny again. Would soaking them in vinegar work?

coca cola

FruitfulOfFruit · 22/06/2008 22:23

Soak them in Coke. Leave them overnight.

cluttercup · 22/06/2008 22:24

Try coca cola then imagine what it does to your insides.....

3littlefrogs · 22/06/2008 22:24

Brasso or similar type of metal cleaner would do it.

maidamess · 22/06/2008 22:24

Brown sauce brings 'em up a treat. But i suppose its the vinegar in it that does it.

JamieOliverAteMyChickens · 22/06/2008 22:24

Vinegar or brown sauce methinks.

SparklyGothKat · 22/06/2008 22:24

I used to spend a disproportionate amount of time as a child rubbing brown sauce into manky coins.

Well, Playstations weren't invented then....

MsDemeanor · 22/06/2008 22:25

Ketchup also works a treat.

SueW · 22/06/2008 22:35

Small amount of vinegar in a dish. Add a pinch of salt. Dip your penny in.

BOSH! All clean, immediately.

(You'll never feel the same about salt and vinegar on your fish and chips though....)

boogiewoogie · 22/06/2008 22:35

Didn't expect this many replies but thank you very much! I shall try the ketchup first!

Re vinegar, does it have to be distilled? Would malt vinegar work?

SlartyBartFast · 22/06/2008 22:43

i think we used to use sand or salt but also heard it took away the value? that can't be true though?

SlartyBartFast · 22/06/2008 22:44

pehraps my mother was lying and did not want all her pennies in the sandpit

blossomsmine · 22/06/2008 23:07

My ds made me do the cilit bang thing years ago and it worked!!!

ChasingSquirrels · 22/06/2008 23:16

ds1 (5) and I tried lemon juice, vinegar and coke as an experiment - I think lemon juice worked the best. They soon tarnish again though.

SueW · 22/06/2008 23:32

For the salt and vinegar, any old vinegar will do. We usually use malt. Have done it at home and with Beaver Scouts.

lou33 · 22/06/2008 23:43
