Cleaning the shower

Porkpieandmustard · 22/05/2026 16:22

We’re going to get rid of our cleaner.

I need some advice about cleaning the shower as this is the one thing she did well (I think she used weapons grade cleaning product).

The grouting is reasonable but goes black quickly.
The shower tray gets stained easily and the doors are plastic. I use a squeegee on them everytime I shower but they never look that good.

What products/ strategies would you recommend?

As her. I use method bathroom, sometimes use Viakal for limescale and also mould magic for silicone when it goes black

Tattybye87 · 22/05/2026 18:46

I am a cleaner, I highly recommended steam cleaning. It's brilliant

SpareVanKeys · 22/05/2026 20:25

HG mould spray. Excellent but don’t breathe it in

franke · 22/05/2026 20:28

Also, at least wipe the chrome fittings with a dry microfibre cloth when you've finished showering.

ElsaSnow · 22/05/2026 20:51

Method daily shower spray on the shower door and the chrome fittings after every shower and wipe with dry micro fibre cloth.

Ilovecheeseyah · 22/05/2026 20:55

Make sure every member of the family cleans it after use. At ours, it is only myself which drives me stir crazy!

Turnitoffnonagain · 22/05/2026 20:55

Cleaning the shower is my most hated chore. The smell of Viakal makes me heave, its so strong. Lately I've used Barkeepers Friend and a microfibre cloth. Much less smelly and good results. 👍

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 22/05/2026 20:56

Why would you clean a shower? It naturally gets clean as you shower.

Secretseverywhere · 22/05/2026 21:01

I rate method shower cleaner you spray on after use and it keeps the water marks away. It’s ylang ylang and makes the bathroom smell lovely. Hg mould spray periodically on grout when it blackens.

Vintagegoth · 22/05/2026 21:07

Viakal on the limescale on taps and shiny bits. Dettol mould spray on the grouting and sealant. Cif on our enamel bath. Not all at once because you will gas yourself. Once a week will do it.

Confessionsofa40yrold · 22/05/2026 22:13

Over 20 yrs as a cleaner. You’ll never beat a good old dose of Viakal on a sponge scouter. I’ve also amazingly recently discovered’Astonish’ daily shower spray. Spray on when you’ve had a shower and it helps prevent water marks and scale build up. It actually works!

I get soap build up and limescale really easily in mine.

I squegee and use the method shower spray every time. Dh just sprays. It definitely helps but the tray still gets slimy from soap round the edge and the fittings get all limescaled.

It's my least favourite job. It takes ages to get it sparkling again and it lasts about 5 minutes.

Porkpieandmustard · 22/05/2026 22:51

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the tips and also knowing that Im
not the only one who hates it.

Best thing we did was swap tiles for panels. No Grout. Easy to clean

That’s hilarious. Assume you aren’t the one doing the cleaning.

You get mould, build ups of limescale and gross orange scum if it's not cleaned.

Imtoooldforallthis · 27/05/2026 08:49

I can't recommend these highly enough for shower doors they are fabulous, no need to squeegee.

I use white vinegar / isopropyl alcohol / water on the shower screen with a magic sponge. Works a treat. I use this mix for cleaning pretty much everything.

Water softener helps too, and also clean more frequently to avoid it being a mammoth task.

FlapperFlamingo · 27/05/2026 13:14

Viajar and mould remover for cleaning.
daily shower spray after showering every time.
always open the window to air after using the shower.

If your DH is the one allowing it to get manky, he can clean it. Maybe then he'd learn to squeegee.

Surely these are the same as any microfibre cloth or am I missing something please?

They are similar but bigger and thicker and absorb a lot more water. I think they are just a really good quality.
