Cleaning a metal watch.....????

I have one of those watches with a metal link strap. I have had it for 10 years and have recently noticed that it has begun to smell ...
I have tried washing it with water and w-up liquid but it hasn't helped. What can I do to get it clean?

I clean mine with soapy water and an old toothbrush

Thank you. I have never actually cleaned it . I sort of felt it got rinsed when washing up, in the shower and when doing my hands etc.....
