I am on the hunt for that elusive of beasts, the comfy sofa bed. My sil and family come to stay several times a year and stay for a long weekend. We have a spare room for the grown ups but currently my niece bunks in with my son on a file out chair bed. I suspect we won't be able to do this for much longer as they're both growing up. I would like to get a double sofa bed for the back lounge to give us options. Ideally one which would also work for adults in future. In my experience they are usually very uncomfortable. The chair bed works for a child for a night or two but I want something more durable. Any ideas?

Sofas & Stuff are really comfy and excellent quality but expensive.
Cheap but actually very good are Futon Company.

If I were you, I'd look on FB marketplace or similar. I often see hardly used ones being sold.

I found one in John Lewis many years ago. It was both a decent sofa and bed. I no longer have it so can’t remember the brand but probably worth a trip to JL.

I went to Dreams and tried a few. The ones with a proper mattress were PERFECT - but they were too big for the room. We wanted one that is comfy as it’s for my eldest when home from uni. I made notes - my favourite was the Elba sofa bed, Verona a close second. Elba was actually cheaper.

I’ve ended up ordering one from Argos with a proper mattress and preying it’s comfy. It’s just the right size for the room and it’s about £1k so not cheap! It’s due to arrive next week. I’ll try to remember to come back and update you, but honestly - if you have the space, pop to a Dreams store and try the two I mentioned!

We have the vimle from Ikea. It’s reasonable price for what you get, and has a decent mattress . You can get 2 seater, seater or corner or self configurable

I sleep permanently on a sofa bed as I don’t have a bedroom, so have tried quite a few over the years! This one below is the one I currently use - I’ve had it for a year, it’s really comfortable and I’ve never woken up in pain (I have extensive arthritis including in my spine).

It’s honestly the only one I’ve found that’s genuinely suitable for every night sleeping. It’s quite pricey but honestly been worth every penny.

Thank you - some good options to look into. They are all pretty pricey but I guess you get what you pay for so probably worth saving up and hopefully just buying the once!

I love our Willow and Hall sofa bed. It was pricey but works equally well as a sofa and double bed.

IKEA ones that are advertised as daily use are good

We had a cheapish DFS one for years - admittedly no one used it as a bed all the time but when it was used it was very comfy

Ikea lycksele is what I sleep on every night! Not the prettiest if sofa beds but comfortable, supportive and easy to put up and down without having to rearrange cushions.

We invested in an expensive sofa bed gor similar teason op but teally what we found was that to make it properly comfortable we would need to add a mattress topper. So buy the sofa bed ypu like the look off and get a thick-ish topper from amazon. Best combo

The most comfortable sofa bed I’ve ever slept on was similar to this one. It had three panels and you pulled them out. It was quite firm and more comfortable than a lot of beds.

We got a Relyon sofa bed from JL 25 years ago, which was - and remains - an excellent sofa and bed.

We went through exactly this and it’s surprisingly hard to get right.
Most of the uncomfortable ones seem to come from the same issue — they’re designed to look like a nice sofa first, and the bed part feels like an afterthought.
The only ones that felt properly different were the ones that seemed to prioritise the mattress and sleeping side of it, rather than trying to hide it.

We sleep on a Friheten from IKEA at my son's house. We like a firm bed so find it comfortable, you can also store the bedding inside it. Also it is a decent width.

Amazing that a sofa bed can last 25 years - do you use it a lot ?

My oak furniture land one with upgraded mattress is brilliant. I’ve slept on it loads and visitors always comment how nice it is. Sofa still like new as well.

Amazing. All these sound great. Glad there are some comfy ones out there.
