From my 'Which way to clean it' book:

Squirt or dab with lemon juice (any kind, including that sold in bottles or plastic containers) and cover with a thin layer of fine salt. Leave for an hour, rinse in cold water and launder as usual.

The book also suggests just using a proprietary rust remover.

I have used the lemon juice and salt approach and it worked, but I had to keep repeating it, i.e. each time I would rinse off the salt but then treat with lemon juice and salt again until the stain seemed to have disappeared. I also put a towel underneath the clothes while treating, which seemed sensible to me!

I had same problem once - no amount of scrubbing would remove the rust. Finally went to shop and bought one of those stain removers - obviously one that lists 'rust' on what it removes. Stain disappeared in seconds.

hi I don't remember the lemon juice affecting the clothes. I can check who wrote the book but to be honest the stain removal section is the only bit I refer to, and the same info is probably out on the internet somewhere without having to buy the book! Or just ask mumsnetters!
