Took her on Friday, sore ears and cough and feeling ill. Advice = calpol. Did that for the weekend. Worse so took her on Monday. No change, chest ok too. Advice = calpol. She's just woken up and has a very sore throat and seems worse, some tonsillitis in the school. Dare I go again, I feel like a time waster but... I've had to have a day off work today and should be there tomorrow if i can be...

Unless she has a serious tenpertaure etc I would leave it. I took DS to the GP for tonsillitis and was told they are under pressure to let such illnesses pass through rather than giving antibiotics....

Or you could try another GP?

temperature

I agree with hidden unless her temperature is through the roof or she is having problems breathing just keep giving her the calpol for today.

did you raise this in goodhousekeeping because it is a scheduling thing

dilbertina · 17/06/2008 09:27

Generally mine need to be ill for a few days before I would even think of taking them to the doc! Obviously I mean more minor stuff not extreme pain or uncontrollable temperature.

What do you want GP to actually do? It sounds like she's got some lurgy and sooner or later will fight it off. It's unlikely a magic pill will suddenly sort her out! However if you're worried it might be something serious you should go if only for reassurance.

I do appreciate the pressure of combining ill children and work - it's a nightmare isn't it?! If my dd or ds had the symptoms you describe I would be starting to consider going to the gp for 1st time if no improvement by tomorrow. On the plus side I always try to remember any illness they shake off is making their immune system stronger!

WilyWombat · 17/06/2008 09:33

Unless mine are VERY ill I give it 2 weeks of the cough/cold/sore throat variety illness before seeing the doc as 9 times out of 10 its a virus which they cant treat with antibiotics. Also given time id rather they got over it on their own rather than building up immunities to antis treating minor things when they may one day need them for something more serious.

Horrible when you need them to get better because of work pressure.

you are all right and very sensible. I was being silly and of course will continue at home with her.

pagwatch i raised it in good housekeeping because i am having a bit of a dizzy day ooops, easily confused with health isn't it? (not)
