I'm older & struggle with opening most jars. Any tried and tested recommendations?

The thing that stops jars from opening is the pressure seal. I use anything blunt in my kitchen to just twist between the jar and the lid to let in air and that sorts it.

I have something similar to what PP has linked. I also have a jar popper device.

a tin opener releases the lid with a pop

IKEA have a really good onee, it opens 3 different sizes of jars

Sgtmajormummy · 15/02/2026 08:14

A wooden spoon.
Tap it smartly on the rim of the lid.
tic tic, tac tac, TOC.
Seal is broken and you can unscrew it.

MyAgileHedgehog · 15/02/2026 08:21

A firm "tap" of the edge of the lid against the bench. Breaks the seal... It is a balance too hard and you break the jar. Not enough and the seal doesn't break. Usual method tap tap tap try....

Running the lid under really hot water because metal expands more quickly than glass

2nd washing up gloves

Normally it is a combination of all 3.

What kind of tin opener? Doesn't that puncture the lid?

No you use the bit that is for opening bottles, slide it between the lid and the screw thread and let some air in.

Shedmistress · 15/02/2026 08:28

Many lids have a little sign on the side, a circle with a line through it, ahixh shows where to position a coin or something not sharp, to let the air in.

Heyhelga · 15/02/2026 08:30

An elastic band wrapped around the side of the lid is a good trick that usually works for me when needed.

Shedmistress · 15/02/2026 08:32

I just took this photo of a jam jar to show the sign, just slide something like a screwdriver between the jar and the lid under the lid just under that little sign, twist it gently til you hear a small pop, and the lid will turn easily.

Try holding the jar, tilted on its side, under hot running water. So the water runs over the lid iyswim.

I struggle with jars, as does my neighbour and DM, and this is my go to. Its never not worked.

MollyButton · 15/02/2026 08:34

This is the gadget I use to release the pressure

Just a blunt ended knife under the rim, no fancy gadgets needed.

RampantIvy · 15/02/2026 08:40

Wow. Every day is a school day.
Sorry to take over your thread @ZZookie , but these are great tips.
