Double oven or microwave with grill?

We’re moving into a new house soon which currently has an integrated single electric oven. I had one of these in our old house and hated it, so planning to replace it straight away, the main aim being to be able to use the oven and grill at the same time.
I’ve never had a microwave with grill before - are they any good, and are they a viable alternative to the double oven? Could I get away with one of these instead of replacing the oven? Of course the double oven does mean I could have 2 ovens running as well.

We’ve had a couple of microwaves with grills, awful. Far easier to look into a grill to see how things are doing than to stop the microwave, open the door, have a look and then restart it. They also don’t seem to grill very evenly ime.

Double oven would be my recommendation.

We have a combination microwave with a grill and a cooker with a separate grill. The only time we ever use the microwave grille is when it is part of some combination programme.

The oven grill is so much easier to use, plus the whole grill or half can be selected. I suppose if you could find a microwave with a slide in grill pan there wouldn’t be too much difference.

We tried a microwave grill and thought it wasn't as good as the oven one. i would go for a double oven and separate microwave. I still think there are times even now with air fryers in many homes when using a grill is the best method.

I went with a double oven and have not regretted it.Being able to use oven and grill at the same time has been much more useful than I expected, especially when cooking big meals. I bought mine from www.allpointsfps.com/ and had a really good experience with them. Ordering process was smooth, and everything arrived exactly as expected.

We have two full size ovens with 2 grills and a combo microwave sat in the utility, but next time, I’d have one oven and an air fryer plus microwave. We only use the second oven on Christmas Day.

I'd have an oven with a grill and I'd have a very good combination microwave.

Before we renovated our house all we had was a combination microwave (think it was a Panasonic, cost circa £450) I still miss it!

We have a microwave that's also an oven and a grill. It is essentially a second, smaller oven which we mainly use as a microwave but also gets used when I cook a roast so I can have the roast potatoes at a different temp to the meat, which is super handy. I don't know how much it cost because it was in the house when we bought it (it's built in and made by Seimens).

Microwave grill completely useless as a grill/oven IME and hard to clean as a microwave. Worst of both worlds. Get an air fryer to use as a second mini oven if you don't want a double oven.

TheDogsMother · 06/07/2026 15:08

Our second oven is a combi which incorporates multiple types of heating, a microwave and grill. Some of these can be used in combination i.e. heating and grilling. Its been great.

The latest thing seems to be a microwave/air fryer combo.

I'm currently considering one of these to replace our failing crappy microwave and first air fryer, which was a cheapy 'we'll see if we get on with this' purchase.

I haven't done much research yet (I have concerns about ease of cleaning) but have found that John Lewis have one that gets good reviews, but is often out of stock.

John Lewis Air Fryer Microwave, 26L, Black / S Steel

Ikea do one for the same price, but the reviews are rubbish. You can also get them from the likes of Panasonic.

You need at least one oven large enough to cook a roast, a big cake or 2 pizzas.
Since I got an air fryer those are the only things I use my oven for.
I have a Samsung Smart oven (microwave, grill and fan oven with several pre-sets like roast chicken in 45 minutes). Frankly it’s only as smart as the person using it (!) and when it dies I’ll just get a basic small microwave/grill combi.
