Carpet stain. I just keep making it worse.

The cat was sick. Very small patch on the carpet. I discovered it just as we were all dressed up and leaving the house, so I grabbed the Vanish powder and sprinkled it liberally on the sick, hoping that would soak it up - like baking powder on a wine stain I suppose? Left it for a couple of hours.

Cleaned it with water (plus the vanish). Made the stain bigger and worse. Left it for a couple of days hoping it would fade as it dried. Nope.

Hoovered it. Didn't help.

Used Elbow Grease soap bar. Scrubbed the stain, lots of water, rinse and blot x 100. Left to dry.

The stain is now several times bigger than the initial cat sick and somehow darker than ever.

Photo attached.

Help!

Have you tried Shaving foam? Not the coloured variety!!

I feel your pain, I spilt dark grey nail varnish on a cream carpet and made it so much bigger worse. Worried we’re going to have to replace it (room is 4m x 6m so pricey!)

Do not scrub the carpet, you will unfortunately make it worse, as you have found. No guarantee but try a generous sprinkling of baking soda then white vinegar. Let it fizz a while then blot and sponge up with cold water.

Did you put the varnish powder dry? Or mix it with hot water?

Get Flash Bleach multi-purpose and spray it on. Leave for 1 minute and get a sponge and scrub it away. Scrub should be a little rough - something like scrub daddy. Always works. You may need to do it twice. I have kids and they spill things drinks/food everyday. Sometimes I add the spray on the stain and mix varnish with some hot water to add on top - extra powerful. But don’t worry just get that spray and it will work.

Edited to add: when you scrub, make sure squeeze and wash the sponge intermittently to avoid spreading stain. Also please make the stain sufficiently wet as if it is too dry then that also just spreads the stains more.

This is almost a carbon copy of how i completely ruined my carpet!

Tiny stain, used Dr Beckman carpet cleaner on it which bleached it and eventually turned orange. Had to have the whole living room carpet replaced as i just couldn't stop messing with the stain so just made it worse.

Where i had my carpets professionally cleaned last year, the guy advised to only use diluted washing up liquid to clean stains. I can attest this has worked several times since

The amount of dog sick/shit I’ve dealt with it’s never let me down

Try Savon de Marseille

I managed to ruin my hall carpet (beige) with Bicarb . Turned the patch bloody orange Hmm

I've got some leave-on carpet spray that I hoover up. Done it 3 times now. I think it gets a bit better each time. Still a visible stain though :/
