Honestly its disgusting, I only cleaned it yesterday with bleach and wipes but im back to having a lovely smell of urine wafting down my stairs again
Im wondering if ds's little tinkles are to blame, but right now I just wanna get rid of the smell, its like a male public toilet in my house bleurgh

Have you got carpet in there, mosschops?

I have the same problem and it is ds1 pee. Despite trying hard, if he leaves it too late he sprays as he is getting is penis out.

I've tried everything and still can't get the smell shifted. No carpet but I'm beginning to wonder if the pee has got through the lino and into the floorboards.

Would love to hear from anyone with a solution.

Make men wee outside

Bicarb sprinkled on the carpet and left for as long as possible. Then hoovered up.
Otherwise regularly cleaning carpet in there. Lovely fluffy round-the-loo-mat washed regularly?

memoo · 11/06/2008 13:03

Its the boys, have to bleach mine every single day and floor around it too because DS (7) doesn't really have a very good aim

mosschops30 · 11/06/2008 21:47

yeah we have carpet, maybe time for a change then.

So you think its not the toilet its the carpet and no amount of harpic/loobloo stuff will shifts it

It's the carpet.

Oh mosschops I had a similar problem when I moved into a house where 3 little boys lived with their parents. I thought the smell was the loo but actually it was urine soaked through the carpet, underlay and floorboards!

Sorry to say this but ime the only way to tell where the smell is coming from is to put your nose to the floor (sorry)

I had to wash the floorboards with Jeyes fluid and leave them bare for weeks on end.

p.s. if you replace the carpet with anything else make sure you seal/grout round the toilet otherwise the same will happen again. Urine seeping under vinyl is most unpleasant (I speak from experience!)

WendyWeber · 11/06/2008 22:21

It is possible to get rid of the smell from the carpet for a bit - give it a good spray all around the base of the loo with Dettox, leave it for a bit and then scrub it, with a brush or a microfibre cloth (I swear by microfibre cloths for ^everything these days)

But ultimately the carpet does need to go. Ours is the same - bleurgh.

We had a similar problem with our downstairs loo - was the carpet and it had to go.

It is amazing where the wee gets. I use a cloth with bleach to go round the back of the loo, underneath the cistern, round the pipe work into all the nooks and crannies. Make sure also that you wipe down the walls as well. We have vinyl now but it still gets smelly even when you can't see the puddles so it is an on-going battle.

How they get the wee to go round corners I don't know but cloth invariably comes back an interesting shade of yellow.
