This has probably been done before, I have little wrigglers in my black dustbin. Should I leave the top open, suffer the stench and hope the birds are peckish or hope the council turn up tomorrow to empty the thing and chuck some boiling water in it?

It's not even summer yet. I'm so ashamed . They were on the floor aswell, ds's friend saw them. Gross.

Bleurgghh! Are you on fortnightly collections?

I'd go with option 2 and then ring the council if they don't empty the bin.

lilysmummy2007 · 11/06/2008 12:16

hi, bath them in vinegar to get rid and kill the smell as well

avenanap · 11/06/2008 12:19

Yes, fortnightly, when they can be bothered. I still have a bin from last week they couldn't be bothered to empty (as does the rest of the street). It's gross. The birds have collected the ones off the floor though, I have not opened it because it's humming!

I shall try the vinegar tomorrow. Thanks for that .

Don't you have a wheelie bin cleaner in your area? I have mine cleaned once a month, it's £2.50

I'm in fortnight collections and it's fine.. I had maggots once but I knew I hadn't tied a bag properly

We also have food recycling bins now and they are great.

If I were you I'd just keave it until next rubbish collection then just hose it out (use one of those patio cleaner things if you've got one)

omg i had a nightmare with this last summer, and i am phobic of the little bastards

i went outside about 10.30pm one night to find them all over the slabbed area and trying to get in my house

took me hours and hours of boiling water and bleach to kill them off

avenanap · 11/06/2008 12:24

i don't have a hose and I have no idea what as happened to the bin cleaner company . I always tie the bags up really well, I've got no idea how the flies got in there in the first place though because the lid's always closed. Smells quite bad though. We have a brown bin for food recycling, this is full as the gardener has put stuff in it and the council couldn't be arsed to empty it. I may look through the yellow pages.......

We'll have maggots by next week, our binmen did the "come really early once in a blue moon trick" this morning. We heard the lorry, and ran into the road to see half the neighbours standing shaking their fists. Normally ours are emptied about lunchtime, and I am convinced that it is a deliberate tactic to change the area that gets done first, as they know they can whizz round extra fast. Normally half the bin men walk along, moving all the bins out, then the lorry drives along emptying with the other half. But on the "trick" weeks, they just race down with the lorry, emptying the tiny number that are already out, then scarper off for a cooked breakfast.

Conspiracy theorist, me

avenanap · 11/06/2008 12:28

That's so annoying! It's not even worth complaining is it? They tell you to leave your bin out before 7am.

I can't find a wheelie bin company .

In that case avenap I'd be on to the council.

I love my brown bin.. are you in Bedfordshire?

avenanap · 11/06/2008 12:31

No. Derbyshire. The binmen were on strike last week , which is why I have a brown bin full. I still can't find a wheelie bin company. Bugger!

choccypig · 11/06/2008 12:32

Yeah Avenap, they do say we should leave it out by 7.30. I used to do it the night before, but for the last few years, they nearly always collect around midday, except, once in a while. We do get weekly collections still, so I shouldn't be too grumpy. It was quite funny this morning, at least I was dressed, unlike my most of the neighbours.

fryalot · 11/06/2008 12:33

ooh, avenap, did she catch up with you?

(sorry for hijack)

avenanap · 11/06/2008 12:37

She has now. Thanks for that. I did look at the local slot on the main menu page but it said the last entry was 26th May.

Thankyou squonk.
