Sofa disaster

Our old but perfectly acceptable sofa (one of a pair) had a run in with a toddler and a permanent marker.

I cant afford to replace it. Covering it again looks like it would cost about the same as a new cheap one.

Has anyone tried dyeing sofa covers? Will a throw look dreadful?

throws look great when they are neatly tucked in, and not brilliant when they are not. If you are going the throw route geta really big one, oversize for your sofa, then it will look better for longer between tuck ins...

Alternatively get your toddler to colour the whole sofa in?

fryalot · 09/06/2008 21:43

I dyed my sofa covers.

It worked okay, but you really need two dyes for one sofa cover.

What TheGoddessBlossom said about throws. I have it on good authority that rug tape fixes the throws in place, but I can't find a stockist at the moment so have no personal experience.

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/06/2008 21:46

Blossom is now trying to imagine a throw fixed on with toupe tape.

Sorry - I haven't even been drinking! Which is unusual....

fryalot · 09/06/2008 21:48

not that kind of rug!!!

(although, it might work...)

SaintGeorge · 09/06/2008 21:55

Drat. I was planning on asking if you had found any tape squonk. I've run out and need some for, funnily enough, a rug.

I have a strange feeling in my gut the last lot might have been Betterware or Kleeneze.

fryalot · 09/06/2008 22:01

I went to our local Boyes's and asked. They said that all their other shops stock it, but not at our one! They tried to sell me some velcro instead

fryalot · 09/06/2008 22:02

And I need a Betterware man. I have things I want to buy but I don't want to pay the extortionate delivery charge!

Sometimes, living in the middle of nowhere is a pain in the bum!

SaintGeorge · 09/06/2008 22:02

Ooh, will get DH to try Hessle Rd and Holderness Rd then.

fryalot · 09/06/2008 22:09

ooh, ooh, if he finds any, can he get some for me too and we can either meet up to swap money and rug tape, or you could perhaps post it to me and I'll paypal you for it, plus postage?

Am almost at the stage of saying that either the squonkettes and Mr. Squonk DO NOT SIT DOWN or they LEAVE HOME!

grr

SaintGeorge · 09/06/2008 22:13

No problem.

Tell 'em to sit on the floor. Furniture is for show, not function, they should know that at their ages

fryalot · 09/06/2008 22:14

Although... I have spent several years saying "they are for sitting on, not trampolining on!" so they may question my change of usage

thank you.

peasholme · 09/06/2008 22:15

Very pleased to stumble across a Boyes's reference on Mumsnet!! 15 years in Southern exile and I miss that shop daily.
www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!4583 is this the stuff you want?

peasholme · 09/06/2008 22:15

ahem, not a slick linker

fryalot · 09/06/2008 22:16

looks good to me.

stG?

(no prizes for guessing whereabouts you are from, peasholme... we went boating in your lake not so long ago )

peasholme · 09/06/2008 22:29

Oooh, did you sink any battleships?
am actually not from Scarborough, just named in honour of my favourite park! Elsewhere in E. Yorks. With crap parks.

SaintGeorge · 09/06/2008 22:32

I love peasholme.

The poster, 'cos that is indeed the correct tape, and the park because of fond memories of childhood holidays

peasholme · 09/06/2008 22:41

I note that we have not solved the OP's sofa dyeing query.
What about new covers? Might that be an affordable alternative?

Minum · 10/06/2008 07:32

Have you tried Dylon Fabric Care Stain Remover 1 (small bottle with blue label) - I got permanent marker on a Zara top this week - put this on, left for 10 mins, washed as normal, and its totally gone
