Four standards of home presentation

I have been thinking as I tidy and clean my house today, that I have four standards which I keep to in my house:
1 (being the lowest) I haven’t put any clothes away and no one can find their uniform, the kitchen is a mess, I feel stressed by the mess and I need to tidy now. If anyone visited I would be embarrassed and they would think I was unwell or not coping.
2) The house is presentable/ comfortable for day to day family life, if a guest pops in unannounced they shouldn’t expect perfection. I still have a basket full of clothes to put a way and if you look closely there are still crumbs underneath the microwave and toaster.
3) The house is presentable for guests unexpected or expected, but please don’t look in that cupboard or you may get buried when all the junk falls out.
4) The house is presentable for selling, everything is spink and span, everything is where it should be. It couldn’t get cleaner or tidier. In fact I may not want to sell it after all.

Today mine is a high 2 or low 3. How about you?

0.5…

ByTheSea · 23/11/2025 11:58

2 (lucky to have a restless DH who putters around tidying)

mamagogo1 · 23/11/2025 12:00

Between 1&2. If it got to 2 fully I’d be over the moon. Don’t even have kids here, I’m just messy

Didntask · 23/11/2025 12:00

Mine is always between 3 and 4. Not a brag, but I genuinely can't relax in my home otherwise.

333FionaG · 23/11/2025 12:01

Between 1 and 2. It's my home, not a showhouse. If anyone decides to drop in, they will just have to accept it. I don't think my friends are that judgemental though.

tinyspiny · 23/11/2025 12:03

Our house is always between 3/4 , there is probably a bit of dust somewhere or a tidy laundry basket with clothes ready to go away but it’s basically clean and tidy and we don’t have messy drawers ever . My husband is vacuuming as I type .

HolidayPlanningAgain · 23/11/2025 12:05

It’s Sunday so it’s 4, by Thursday/Friday will drop to a 3 but that stresses me so Saturday morning is housework time.
I hate my house being untidy/dirty I don’t go in the DSC’s rooms as they are disgusting and it’s not a fight I need anymore!

Tryingatleast · 23/11/2025 12:06

Yeah more 1 sadly-
long day in work yesterday (retail) and have a potential chest infection and actual period, dh working around the clock at the mo, 4 kids, 2 working on homework at kitchen table so extra mess. Bathroom filthy with piles of necessary to unnecessary organised washing on a dirty floor (my god if anyone saw them😅)Dishwasher on but piles next to the sink . Forgot to put out bin so bags of recycling in utility room. Hugs to everyone 2 or under- some day a cleaner will come and rescue me and I’ll hug her/ him!!!!

HouseAshamed · 23/11/2025 12:07

Is there a 0 or minus something?

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 23/11/2025 12:15

Mine is generally a 2, mainly tidy (DH is a neat freak) but there’s generally a bit of cleaning needs doing. Why did we have a light grey carpet with a dog?

runrabbitrunrabbitrun · 23/11/2025 12:16

🤣🤣🤣

ghostiewhisp · 23/11/2025 12:22

Mines usually 2-3
there’s clean dishes waiting to be put away and the cat is asleep in an Amazon box but you can come in and the bathrooms are clean

olderbutwiser · 23/11/2025 12:26

Trouble is DH and I are out by a factor of 1 - my 2 is his 1. Luckily we both recognise this, and I am the beneficiary.

Today I'd say we are 3, he'd say we are 2.

1.5?

The kitchen is a state, the dishwasher needs emptying and filling up again and there's crumbs and dirty crockery. But we're going to cook again later on

But the rest of the house is tidy. It does need hoovering though but I have an empty laundry basket.

NutButterOnToast · 23/11/2025 12:42

Jugendstiel · 23/11/2025 12:45

Hovers between 1 & 2. It's 3 when we have guests. It has never, not even for one day in my entire life, been 4.

I just tidied hoovered and polished the living room so I could sit in it and enjoy it I peace, as it was too grubby for me to relax. It only took 10 mins, so why I didn't do it earlier in the week, I don't know.

The kitchen could do with about 30 mins proper cleaning. Work surfaces are all wiped and dishes all put away but the floor needs mopping and the kitchen table has all sorts of clutter on it.

LBOCS2 · 23/11/2025 12:55

It hovers around a 2, except for the utility room which is always, without exception, a 1. We have occasional flashes of 3 but to be honest, I get one area of doom sorted and then another one crops up because of all the misplaced crap from the original doom area.

OverNotOver · 23/11/2025 12:59

Ours is currently a low 3 - there’s loads of toys out but being actively played with rather than strewn around.

Thats because we had guests yesterday though. I’d say 1 is our default state, we generally blitz it all the way up to 2 on a Sunday…

Haha me too. Months later I still can’t find things I have stashed away when tidying up before guests arrive

Likewise, a solid 2.

LifeBeginsToday · 23/11/2025 13:06

I'm a 3 at the lowest point. I couldn't cope with any lower. It's like the hoarding scale photos. Level 1 would be too much.

HouseAshamed · 23/11/2025 13:07

I'll say 0 then, although it's probably worse than that.
A lot of it will be 'things that might be useful' but I wouldn't be able to find them.

caringcarer · 23/11/2025 13:22

I've just got back from a week awY on a holiday with my sister leaving g DH and 2 teens home. It's not looking great with my laundry and case not put away yet. 3 bag of shopping waiting to be put away. I've got a nasty chest infection so in bed resting. I'll get up later and put my laundry in and shopping away. DH will tidy and cleaner comes tomorrow morning so it will be up to a 3 1/2 by lunch time.

BillieWiper · 23/11/2025 13:26

Well to me if I was having guests I'd spend a few hours cleaning the areas they'll see.
If not then I don't really care but do do the washing up and clean bathroom as I go along and sometimes hoover. But I hate dusting and never do it!

I think it's part of my ADHD that I find cleaning quite overwhelming. Luckily I have someone who relies on cleanliness and order for their own MH/PD so I don't need to do much!
