Smelly rug

A rug recently got wet and has taken ages to dry so has that lovely 'wet dog' smell about it! Ive been drying it outside whenever possible in the hope the smell disappears but its still there. Is there an easy way of getting rid of this stinky smell? It was a pretty cheap rug so not the end of the world if I have to get rid of it but id like to rescue it if possible! Thank you 😊

i’d recommend thoroughly washing it and then getting it dried on an industrial drier.

I find if I leave a rug out on the washing line long enough, eventually two days come along consecutively that are perfect conditions for washing it (rain) and drying it (sunshine and breeze), and then I bring it in.

This may not suit everyone, admittedly.

I just got some raw sheep wool (I’m a crafter) and oh lord, it reeks.

I’ve just washed and rinsed it about four times in hot soapy water, leaving it to soak overnight. White vinegar in the final rinse of water to help remove the smell.

It still had a slight sheepy smell but I dried it and kept it aired and the smell has vanished now.

I would say if it still smells you need to wash it again but then keep it well-aired while drying it. And definitely white vinegar!
