Restoring an aluminium gadget that has been through the dishwasher

I've always been really careful with my Alessi juicer - always rinse it by hand straightaway after using it. "Someone" took it off the draining board and bunged it in the dishwasher. It's now a dull grey rather than shiny.

Any tips to restore it? I've tried a little Barkeepers Friend on one part of it but it doesn't look as shiny as it was before...

Try wiping it with vinegar.

Autosol. Halfords.

I wouldn't use metal polish on a culinary item.

The problem is that the chemicals in the dishwasher tablet (alkali) have oxidised the aluminium. It's a chemical reaction.
You could try using a mild acid ( vinegar or lemon juice) and scrubbing gently with a non stick scourer to see if you can get rid of it.

Otherwise you can get commercial aluminium cleaners but some of them are pretty toxic.

Barkeepers friend is probably not the best thing to use as I think this is also alkaline.
You could try adding a bit of salt to the lemon juice/ vinegar for a bit more abrasion.
To be honest, I think you may be able to get it to more of a silvery aluminium colour but I don't think you will be able to restore it to a shiny mirror like finish

Thanks all. I'll try some of your suggestions and let you know how it goes.
