What has the dishwasher done to my wooden spoons??

My dishwasher is clearly going through some stuff right now… any theories for why it’s taking it out on my wooden spoons?? All in one cycle!

Or is there any chance this could be a mouse???

What has the dishwasher done to my wooden spoons??

Because wood is a natural product (unlike ceramic, glass, metal cutlery or plastic) and it is full of tiny holes. Over time, the very hot water and the steamy conditions in your dishwasher is going to damage it.
Your dishwasher manual probably tells you to hand wash wooden spoons. I do.
I don't think a mouse would survive a dishwasher cycle.

MaxineHarper · 20/09/2025 20:37

many things cannot go in the dishwasher as it reduces their life:

  • wooden spoons etc (as PP said they’re porous)
  • sharp knives (makes them less sharp)
  • Graters (makes them less sharp)
  • non-stick items (as they lose their non-stick coating)

Thanks for the replies. It’s strange that the damage would be so extreme after one cycle! But point taken - will buy new ones and hand wash in future!

(Just to say, I didn’t think the mouse would survive the cycle but maybe crept in afterwards… farfetched, I realise!)

Have you checked your kitchen to make sure there are no stray beavers hiding in there?

TomatoSandwiches · 20/09/2025 20:55

Did you put it on a different cycle from normal?

elonmusk · 20/09/2025 21:06

Same cycle as normal. Good idea @cluelessaboutbiology- am off to set beaver traps right now!!

When did you last see your hamster?

elonmusk · 22/09/2025 07:20

Ok so we discovered the answer. It was a rat. My husband saw it coming up out of the downstairs toilet last night. Pest control on their way. Can’t believe it 😫😫

@elonmusk I’m sad for you that it wasn’t a beaver after all!

ladybirdsanchez · 22/09/2025 07:37

The rat came up the toilet? 😱

StrongLikeMamma · 22/09/2025 07:39

Never put wood in a dishwasher!

Omg! It climbed out the loo??? 🙈🙈🙈

Snugglemonkey · 22/09/2025 07:41

Oh no! That is really horrible!

elonmusk · 22/09/2025 07:51

Yes! It must have climbed out of the loo, walked brazenly across the kitchen, climbed into the dishwasher and ate the wooden spoons, and then departed the same way. All while my two cats stood by and watched. We are either moving or burning down the house.

@elonmusk Check your drainage if it was in the loo.

Ive never told anyone this in real life, but DM found one in the loo in a first floor bathroom! DH managed to extract it! We got all the drains checked as we thought it had climbed up the waste pipe from the inside because the pipe/drainage was damaged. We had cameras put down the drains but - totally secure. No damage. So we were mystified as to how it got in the loo.

We can only think that it climbed onto a flat roof near the bathroom window and just walked in as the window was open. Hot summer! Then wanted a drink and could not get out of the loo! Never had the same issue again but at that time neighbours kept chickens and rats love chicken feed. A problem hen huggers don’t factor in!

TalulahJP · 22/09/2025 08:18

😱

Radleyradley · 22/09/2025 08:21

Wow that took quite a turn 😳

elonmusk · 22/09/2025 19:35

Oh @TizerorFizz your poor DM! Downstairs is bad enough!!

So the pest control man came today and yes, it appears as though the monster has been coming up through the toilet because he probably got into our drains through a broken pipe. So now we’ve got traps down in the downstairs loo with door firmly closed, and poison in the outside drain (under a manhole), pest control coming back later this week, and drain people coming to investigate pipes!! Meanwhile my poor DH is going into therapy to deal with the shock. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
