Storing wedding cake long term: holes in icing

My DD would like me to store the top layer of her wedding cake for a few years so that we can use it, she hopes, for a christening cake. This is what my MIL did for me and it was lovely, even five years later!

The cake maker has passed on detailed instructions for how to store it but there are holes in the icing formed by the cake topper. Should I try to seal these up somehow or just wrap it as instructed and hope for the best? I've asked the cake maker but had no reply unfortunately.
