Help to get rid of washing machine smell

Mokel · 23/08/2025 07:30

My parents told me to do a wash at 90c with nothing in the machine - no clothing and bedding and no detergent etc. As this is what their new washing machine instructs once a month.

Since then my washing machine stinks. I did wipe the rubber. Did a load this morning and with fabric conditioner, you can smell the stink on the clothes.

Anything I can do to remove the smell?

Cleaning the machine hasn’t caused the smell. It will be a build up of pods sludge and damp caused by the door being kept shut - that is the usual culprits.

I would do a few 90 degree washes with soda crystals sprinkled liberally in the drawer, drum and seal.

If it's still there then run a wash with zaflora in the drawer and drum

Always leave the door open

I did a 15 min wash cycle with soda crystals and some Zaflora. Does not smell musty.

I always keep the door open and never use pods. Liquid detergent in a dosing ball

Use washing powder you don’t get a smelly machine then. It takes a few washes to clear the smell but as long as you use powder it won’t come back.

I can't use washing powder of any variety due to asthma

Have you cleaned out the filter and the dispenser drawer? And then run another hot wash. Chuck some vinegar in the drum when doing the hot wash.
