We have tried everything, put washing machine cleaner through three times, cleaned the filter, cleaned the detergent drawer but still everything that comes out smells foisty and stale and horrid, it’s really getting me down! Any advice would be very welcome!

I had this recently, all of the washing was smelling musty and just not clean.

I ran a couple of cleaning cycles and switched to powder detergent instead of pods/liquid and it seems to have worked.

The smell comes from the bacteria on the clothes, particularly those with strong body odours. The gel/liquid detergents leave residues on the clothes that build up over time and the bacteria just multiply in them.
I had this problem for so long before figuring it out!

Now I use powder for whites and liquid +laundry cleanser for darks. I believe the powder has bleaching agents and kills the bacteria, or leaves less residues. And as it's really the liquid/gel causing the issue, I add laundry cleanser which is just magic.
You might need to run few cycles before completely getting rid of the smell (if you can do a hot wash to accelerate the process), but if you are then consistent it should not return.

I have recently switched to an eco friendly pod which is when the problem started so it obviously isn’t strong enough. It’s mainly towels/thicker materials that carry the smell. Will try these suggestions, thank you

I agree, i would try washing the towels and bedding with powder at 60 and see if that helps.

Have you drained it completely (using the little hose) as well as cleaning the filter?
