Little flies everywhere

Hiya I live in a studio flat and I’m getting really annoyed at little flies appearing.

I have a good air purifier and have this on a lot and regularly rarely open a window unless I’m getting the flies out. I won’t see any for a couple of days and then as soon as I put any food waste into the recycling they will be everywhere.

considering the windows are mostly shut, I just don’t know where they are coming from and how to get rid of them

any advice please?

Sound like fruit flies. Have you checked your fruit bowl or any pot plants?

HotCrossBunplease · 30/07/2025 18:33

Ah I just saw you mention food waste. They will be breeding in your counter top food waste bin.

Or drain flies - black, tiny, heart-shamed wings and come from the plug hole / sink overflow

Could be fungus gnats in any plant pots?

drain cleaner down all the plugs, let house plants fully dry out before watering them if you have any! All food waste outside asap. I wouldn't keep food waste in the house in this sort of weather.

Check bananas/other fruit, and wash your fruit bowl. Might need to empty food waste more often for the time being

Fungus gnats living in your drains. Use some thick bleach to coat around the inside of the drains leave for 30 mins and then pour a load of boiling water down each drain

It's the food waste. During summer consider not using a food waste bin, or storing it outside if possible. Pour drain cleaner down drain, wipe down all surfaces

Put a glass of something sweet out where you see them, they can’t resit it.
red wine has worked also. Keep it out for a good few days. This will get the numbers down. Then dispose down the sink with water and a good glut of beach.
