Any help with stinky carpet

My poor DDs room! I should first say we moved into this house a month ago and it has stank since we moved in so no idea what it is and not responsible. DH calls it a "teenage boy smell". I can only liken it to a time when DH was particularly sweaty after a workout in a dirty t-shirt and I couldn't get it washed quick enough.

I am assuming the smell is coming from the carpet as we have changed the curtains and there was nothing else in there when we moved in.
The carpet is not very thick or soft and it sounds sort of crispy when you walk on it. I know, horrible, but DH is resisting getting it changed before we get the ceiling skimmed (another story!) and it looks like we are going to be waiting a month for that. I just can't stand the smell any longer! I am 7m pregnant which doesn't help my tolerance I guess but DH can smell it too.

So far we've been over it a couple of times a week with a decent vacuum but also 3× with a carpet cleaner (bissell , I think proheat pet, worked wonders at the old place and on other carpets in the new place). Twice we have tried just drenching the thing in febreeze and DH did a shake n vac. I genuinely don't think the smell has gone down at all!
Any tips on what else I can try?
(Or just talk me down from ripping the whole thing out myself)

Rip it out? Get a new one.

LurcherMumma · 24/07/2025 18:39

@DorothyStorm deep down, I really feel like that is the only way , just hoping there is something I haven't tried first.

I think I just need to get DH to re prioritize it a bit, it's really quite gross.

Yeah I’d have to rip it out I’m afraid as it could be anything making is stink
get a cheap rug for the floor in the meantime

If it is as bad as you say, i wouldn't want my child on it.

Just pull it up and have bare boards until you get the permanent flooring. Plenty of people live with the old bare boards while they're doing a place up

Remove the gripper rods though around the edge in case of treading on them

@lovemycbf that's actually a great idea.

I don't know why I have been thinking we have to wait and get it replaced properly, of course we can just rip it out for now and get the new carpets later.
