Hi, we've recently moved into an old cottage which has a large open fireplace in the sitting room.
I'm trying to think of what I could put in there to decorate it (rather than leaving it as a large gaping hole in the room) as it's unlikely to be used for quite some time, if ever. Having painted the entire house in the last few weeks I have run out of ideas...can anyone make some lovely stylish suggestions which I will shamelessly pillage and shrug stylishly when complimented on, as if to say "oh it's just something I threw in here, it comes quite naturally you know"

How large is large? Are we talking about a big hole, big enough for flowers, or a sofa?!

ah, good point.
It's armchair size!

A large wicker basket with logs in sounds good.

A wine rack. Full.

something to prevent all your warm air disappearing up the chimney

(but it does need an air-brick sized ventilator top and bottom or it will get damp with condensation)

Blimey, well spotted.

Well, if the OP's anything like me, she probably does still have a gaping hole... Smile
