Gas burners on hob: how to clean & how often?

I’m trying to tackle some of the household jobs that I never get around to at the moment. One of them is that gas burners on the hob. I wipe the actual hob itself at least once a day but the but I’m not on top of are the burners (not sure if they’re called that!)… the black circular cap thing and the metal ring below it. I’ve attacked them this morning with Pink Stuff and a toothbrush but there’s still a bit more to go. It might just be that I need another attack with the Pink Stuff and some elbow grease. And then how do you stop them getting into this state in the first place? Should I be wiping them down when I wipe the hob? For some reason, it’s never occurred to me to do that.

I chuck mine in the dishwasher every so often, along with the grids. It seems to do the trick.

I did that and the dishwasher wrecked the coating so read the instructions first. I have the same issue.
