Has anyone tried the salt free water softeners

Hi.
Has anyone tired the salt free water softeners? I live in a medium hard water area but I want the soft hair I had when I lived in a soft water area. I can find discussions about salt based water softeners but not salt free.

Isn’t that how they work though, with salt? (Please excuse my lack of chemistry knowledge!)

There are no salt versions that neutralise the minerals so they dont scale up things, although they dont remove anything. My chemistry is about as good as yours andit seems to change the structure of the minerals. I am not talking about the magnet ones they dont really work.
