Tap water after 20 minutes

We’ve had a water filter fitted and the water tastes fine straight from the tap but tastes awful after about 20 minutes after sitting in a glass. Does anyone know why this would be and does it suggest it isn’t safe for my DCs and me to drink? It’s the same whether in a glass or mug so isn’t to do with the container it’s in.

I’ve googled and can’t find anything about the taste changing that quickly and why that might be. It isn’t a chlorine taste, just really unpleasant.

Thanks

Don't know about the filter, but ours is like that without a filter. It's never done me any harm.

Could it be the chlorine evaporating? You're used to the chlorinated taste but not what's left afterwards? Would it help to keep it cold - add ice or keep it in an insulated bottle?

I find it difficult to imagine there would be anything unsafe about water that's sat out for 20 mins, but I understand why you want to get to the bottom of this to be sure.

edited to delete because I skimmed your point about having had a filter fitted, which probably makes my suggestions worse than useless! Apologies

Hi thanks for the replies.

We did recently move and it is a hard water area. We’ve had a lot of problems with the house (toilets not useable due to limescale in the pipes and nothing flushing through or pipes just not put in properly). Im wondering whether they didn’t put the right pipes in for the tap water too but I have no plumbing knowledge and it’s just based on not trusting anything they did as had so many issues.

But logically the water would taste awful straight from the tap wouldn’t it if it was the pipes? It wasn’t great til we put the filter in but then we have the water going off after a while issue.

I don’t think it’s a metallic taste. Just chemically/stale. Can disguise it with squash but I feel bad doing that so using bottled water which isn’t ideal.

Try putting a slice of lemon in it or something? Doesn’t have to be squash. Or just run a fresh glass whenever you want one.

If you have moved to the London area the water tastes horrible no matter what your pipes are like. Also I have never heard of any difference between pipes within the house for hard or soft water areas.
If your toilets aren't flushing have you checked to see if the cisterns are filling suffiently?

TheGreenBow · 16/06/2025 11:43

Hi, thanks. the cisterns fill but one toilet had pipes put in at the wrong angle and one had pipes so full of limescale that the toilet paper sticks to it and won’t flush down the loo at all now. I probably need to do a different post on that!

Thanks I can mask the taste it’s just not knowing if it’s safe to drink or not.

How long since you changed the filter, my water from my fridge starts smelling nasty if I haven't changed it for 6 + months.

Is the water okay of you bypass the filter or try the garden tap? (which probably isn't via the filter)

Hi the filter is very new. The water doesn’t taste nice straight from the tap without it.

Bit of an update - I’ve just tried again and it still tastes nice after sitting for ages. Now wondering if it’s only happening in the evening. Which may sound mad but I’m sure I’ve read that water companies treat the water then. I’ll try again tonight and see if it’s to do with the time of day.
