HONESTLY - What does it say about me that I find Stepford wives an

Aspirational (if a little freaky) film.

In my heart I would LOVE to be able to look fabulous, keep the house clean and tidy, have great sex with my husband, cook amazing meals, look after my children like Mary Poppins.

I have never had a career urge, only ever maternal one.

I am not brainwashed by my husband or father, it is something deep inside, that in this day and age it is almost impossible to voice without people thinking I am a freak.

Haven't seen the film but I know the story. Whilst I think a lot of people would love to be able to do all of those things fabulously all the time, it just is not possible in the real world. Well, not all the time. And whilst all thse things are fairly laudable, they don't in themselves make a very interesting or fulfilling life. You need other interests outside the home, intellectual/spiritual/physical ones, or else you would tend to be a very tedious individual, even if you did cook perfect scones

Most of the women around this neck of the woods pretty much freak me out as they are VERY Stepfordy.
I can at least maintain one of the above criteria and anyway, don't their heads blow up or something in the film/book?
I am waiting for the alternative version of the film...Schmepford Wives - The Reality.

eenybeeny · 22/05/2008 16:43

Remember that Mary Poppins is a paid childcare professional. She wouldn't be cleaining the house, cooking or boffing Mr Banks whilst on duty. Its an awfully tall order to do all that.

Bleh. It would be okay if the women wanted to be like that, but it's the men-folk who want their wives to be subservient.

I have only seen the first film, not the remake.

jingleyjen · 22/05/2008 17:11

I have only seen the first film, years ago, and agree that the women are fine but the men are very wierd.

GentleOtter · 22/05/2008 17:12

Will we be waiting for Stepford Husbands ?
Could you think of anything more hideous than that ?

But they have to wear stupid hats and long dresses in yucky pastel colours. Also, you are mixing your films. Mary Poppins had character, but all the Stepford wives sound as though they have overdosed on valium. I don't think there are many scenes of them interacting with their children.

I just watched this film. The original. I so wanted it to have a happy ending but it just didnt. Yes what I kept thinking was - what about all the children raised in that town???? Surely they must all be killed and turned into robots as well (the girls at least) because otherwise how would they live there????? How would a robot like that raise a child??? I dont get it. And what about the husbands. Why did they all go along with it? My DH would surely kill anyone who tried to put me in a sunhat!
