Gas or cat pee?

Can they smell similar?
I thought I could smell gas, but when my dh came home he thought he could smell cat pee in the corridor downstairs (we live in a first floor flat, share corridor, with a little bit at the bottom of our stairs, and we have two cats).

You might think it bizarre but I have a bad sense of smell.
Should we clean the carpets or call out the gas people

hands and knees. sniff carpet. feel for damp patches. unpleasant, but better than alternative!

Pavlovthecat · 21/05/2008 20:13

Tigana - oh dear, that does sound unpleasant!

It probably is the cats. I wonder why? They have never done it before, their litter is clean, their cat flap is open so they can come in and out.

Yorkshirepudding - i thought it was the male cat who had smelly spray, before they were neutered? we have a boy and a girl, both done.

Do they fight? We have 2 cats and one is most definitely the boss and sometimes the other one won't use the litter tray because the boss is lurking around there!
Or could a neighbourhood cat have got in through the catflap and either pee'd or scared them enough to make them pee in a territorial way?

Pavlovthecat · 21/05/2008 20:20

Tigana - they have been fighting a lot recently. Thry have gone from loving brother and sister to pretty much disliking each other. Well, that actually happened a while ago, but they have tolerated each other with the odd fight. Recently, its become more apparant they dislike each other!

We also moved the litter tray outside about 3 weeks ago. They have been using it perfectly fine, even when it rained, but maybe they dont like it there.

Its horrid. I have cleaned the carpet and the walls at cat height and above where I think it was done, and more.
I can still smell it.

I could smell it on me at work, I am now paranoid that they have sprayed on everything!!

It does not smell like normal wee to me, but to dh, he said immediately that the cats have peed in the corridor. So either way, somethings not right

...And its not a gas leak, or else we would have blown up by now

Febreeze?

Wash stuff using biological washing powder.

you don't have a basil plant anywhere, do you?

I was convinced that our neighbour's cat had got in through our flap and peed, but eventually the smell was confirmed to be coming from dh's basil!!

Pavlovthecat · 23/05/2008 07:59

LOL tissy!

We do have a basil plant but its indoors, and the smell is elsewhere. It seems better this morning, fingers crossed.
