Carpet cleaner recommendations?

cashmerecardigans · 25/05/2025 15:19

Has anyone got a recommendation for a carpet cleaner? I’ve read a zillion reviews and I can’t make my mind up. Looking at Vax, shark or Bissell. Not fussed about budget, just want one that is effective and not too much of a faff for clean. For some ridiculous reason I thought it would be a great idea to have cream carpets so investment in a good quality carpet cleaner feels sensible.

I bought a refurbished Bissell and seems quite good. Also used it to clean my mattress last year - the water that came out was 🤑

@roses2 could you find the model number of the one you have as I can’t get that link to work?

The one I bought is a few years old and I went for the one with the largest discount. How about this one? There is a further 15% off:

Depending on your budget, the same seller has other models also up to £200 which include a 40% discount off new price

@roses2thanks so much, I’ll have a proper look now

I Have recently bought the new Shark Carpet xpert deep cleaner and OMG it is by far and away the best carpet shampooer I have ever encountered and I have owned several over the years.

I bought this one as it came out top on every review site I saw and I totally agree with the excellent reviews.

Prices vary dependant upon which model but it starts from about £150.

cashmerecardigans · 25/05/2025 16:56

@JadeSeahorsethanks so much, have you had a vax before? That’s where I started but the reviews were quite mixed

Yes I've had 2 Cashmere cardigans. (I'm an oldie 😂). This new Shark was purchased to replace an older Vax.

In fairness both were excellent but this new Shark blows everything else I have ever had previously out of the water. It's not as heavy or bulky as previous models I've had before either.
5 year guarantee too!

cashmerecardigans · 25/05/2025 21:45

@JadeSeahorse thanks so much, that’s so helpful. Looks like it’s on offer at the moment too x

Another vote for vax. Had a Bissell before that was a pain in the arse to get setup and left the carpets quite wet (but clean). The Vax takes 2 mins to get ready to use and the carpets are dry enough to walk on within 30-60mins of cleaning. Way better. I love it so much I no longer get grumpy when the dog walks muddy pawprints into the house.

AliasGraced · 25/05/2025 21:57

I had a vax and used it once, It sucked huge lumps out of the carpet and left them soaking wet and not clean. I have never used it again.

businessflop25 · 26/05/2025 00:01

I had a Vax and OMG the thing was worse than useless. Got the carpets wet but didn’t suction it back up at all. Ended up putting towels down to soak up the worst of the water. Sent it back to vax for a replacement and the next one was exactly the same. Would never have one again. Now got a shark and it’s amazing. Cleans the carpets so well. The hand held attachment is always attached and ready to use plus has a self cleaning function. The whole thing comes apart easily for easy cleaning. Would highly recommend.

cashmerecardigans · 26/05/2025 21:49

Thanks all, it seems that vax is definitely one to avoid. Shark seems to be the preferred option, I really appreciate the feedback, far more use than than the reviews I’ve read

I think the vax platinum is the one with to get. Not older models.

PinkySky · 21/09/2025 23:23

@cashmerecardigans Could you please share which carpet washer you bought at the end, and how happy you are with it?

I am in the same dilemma with mixed reviews, and your feedback would be greatly appreciated

@businessflop25 do you mid sharing whether you are still happy with your Shark?
Which model did you get and how many times have you used it - wondering if it passed your tests :)

I have a Vax , it's ok for cleaning but takes a long while to draw up the water . I use a pet safe solution which is low foam or Astonish which is higher foam depending i=on what I'm cleaning .
It's quite heavy when full of water though .

TMMC1 · 22/09/2025 13:55

Happy to recommend Vax. We have the large one for full rooms and the spot cleaner for incidents. Both are excellent but I do suggest you consider the spot cleaner. It is quick and easy and in our house used very regularly and reliably

Thank you @70isaLimitNotaTarget for solution recommendation- super useful, and good to know that a variety can be used (doesn’t have to be a Vax brand as opposed to what I’m hearing about Shark).

Which Vax model have you got?

Thank you @TMMC1 could you please share which models you have? There are quite a few to choose from, would be good to hear from experience which work well :)
Thank you

I recently bought the bissell pet pro when it was on offer on Amazon and really pleased with it! The dirt that came off my relatively clean looking stair carpet was unbelievable!

Hire4homes · 17/02/2026 15:30

All off the previous messages are for cold water versions. Although these are ok, the hot water you put in cools very quick, a heated one works better as you get constant hot water - Also the cleaning product you use will make a massive difference to the clean - Also always remember to go back over with clean water to rinse all of the chemical out. - bit of a plug sorry, but you can get them from www.edgehire4homes.co.uk/product-category/cleaning-equipment-for-hire/

As most carpets fabrics clean better with cool to cold water thats not too important.

yes, the detergent or soap used makes a big difference
