How clean is your house

I'm decluttering and cleaning today. Home alone so treating myself in between chores with an episode of How clean.
Series 7 episode 2 and I can't believe the state of the fridge. Can't understand how it can get like that?
I'm watching random ones not starting from the first one. Just on YouTube.

Right now? Pretty damn clean! I've jusr spent all day cleaning it, because we've got guests coming for a BBQ at 6:30 and it was a sty. Not that untidy, but in need of a serious clean. It's probably cleaner than it's been in about 2 years tbh! I'm knackered and my back hurts. Off for a bath in my clean bathroom now! Fortunately dh is doing all the cooking, so my job is done!

Well done. Hope you have a fabulous bbq.

Thank you!

Inspired by this thread, I've just started watching an episode (the first one to come up on YouTube). After the first minute I had to stop to gather myself together 😭

Terrifying!

I've got the best of Jimmy Somerville blasting. Think I'll chill now as have done loads.

Series 5 episode 1 - Angela and David

@Lins77 yes saw that. They were rather bullied in the supermarket 😳

’How clean is your house?’ Is great for cleaning motivation! It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure though.

I liked it when it was broadcast originally and have watched them on YouTube too. Even my A Level students liked it when we talked about it a few years ago. 😆

I used the episodes to think this is what would happen if I follow my (lazy) instincts and do no/very little housework! But I now follow TOMM (Rock the Housework Guided Cleans keep me on the straight and narrow mainly so this is unlikely to happen. I love a before and after photo/video on social media too - very satisfying!

I liked Kim and Aggie’s no nonsense approach but I think Kim is intimidating and has had a bit of bad press in recent years after appearances on Loose Women and other programmes. Not sure if it is warranted. Aggie was on a podcast I listen to recently - great sensible Good Housekeeping style cleaning advice!

Some of the people on HCIYH were very vulnerable so I hope they got some follow up help.

Depends what you mean by clean. Dusty, unhoovered but swept, cluttered, messy but work tops wiped and bathroom sink and toilet clean or grime and ingrained filth? I'm having a new heating system, plastering and a bedroom renovation done in the next few weeks and I can't be bothered with hoovering and dusting until it's done. The decluttering is overwhelming though.

TroysMammy · 18/05/2025 07:41

My oven has broken so one less job. I'm putting off buying a new one until I really have to.

Meadowfinch · 18/05/2025 07:46

Nothing like that fridge !! 😮

I'm a full time working single mum so my house isn't perfect but the kitchen and bathrooms are clean. Sitting room, hall and office are pretty good, dining room needs cleaning.

Bedrooms are dusty but are getting done & beds changed today.

No-one would get sick and I could welcome visitors within about 20 minutes.

Greenartywitch · 18/05/2025 08:17

With pets it is almost impossible to keep a house completely clean.

When I clean the kitchen floor my cats have the habits to come in from the garden with muddy paws within 10 minutes...

At least my house does not have clutter/mess as I am quite tidy but it is not spotless and never will be due to cats' hairs, paw prints and so on.

begone25 · 18/05/2025 09:33

We are waiting to start a renovation so mines pretty bad at the minute! Hard to keep an old place pristine and doesn’t look very different when I have done a ‘big clean’ as all the carpets, paintwork etc are old. Quite like the freedom it brings not caring much about it!

LushLemonTart · 18/05/2025 11:10

I wasn't asking people how clean their houses are 🤣

It's the old tv programme I've been watching on YouTube.

@Bert2025 Kim and Aggie had a big falling out. Apparently didn't speak the last 2 years of filming?
Yes Kim had had bad press. Can't help but like her though. I loved her in the jungle.

My house used to be a shithole but its ok now. The one thing I have always kept clean is the fridge. That gets cleaned roughly every 10 days. I basically do it every time I get a food shop.

I do like cleaning programmes. I always hope it helps the people involved that it doesn't feel so hopeless for them. And they get the support they need.

Onelifeonly · 18/05/2025 11:30

I used to love that programme. Though the homes were extremely messy, it used to inspire me to try a bit harder in my own house! And gave tips on what to use if you didn't have a specific cleaning product.

LushLemonTart · 18/05/2025 12:48

It's lovely seeing how happy they are after. I know some do regress. How sad to be able to let that happen.

poor mental health can do this don’t be so judgmental!!!

Lins77 · 18/05/2025 14:03

I used to be a social worker in a community mental health team and have seen a few really bad houses - one in particular springs to mind where the cobwebs were reaching down from the ceiling to the bed. The electricity had been cut off years ago, there were old newspapers everywhere and the bathroom was not a pretty sight.

It's hard to imagine how people live like that, but it doesn't happen overnight. I guess you don't notice things getting gradually worse and worse. And then it just seems too much to do anything about.

I am aware of that. Can't do much for your mental health or physical health living in squalor.

Latest one she has her 94 year old dad there. It's filthy and she's a shopaholic. Her dm died 15 years ago think that's when it was last cleaned.

@Lins77 I can imagine you've seen some horrors. It must be frustrating as most won't change.
