any ideas on how to keep a throw on a settee?

Our seating is all tatty and knackered so I bought throws for everything.

However everyone in my bloody household just throws themselves on the settee (probably why it's all bust in the first place) and the throw kind of falls over them like a blanket. When they stand up, they don't put it right, they just go away, they come back and sit down again so the throw is all crumpled up in a corner of the settee.

This drives me potty.

I spend a huge amount of time every day smoothing throws over settee cushions and tyring to make them look nice.

I have tried sewing them on, pinning them on with safety pins, sewing elastic on them and wrapping the elastic around the settee. Nothing blardy well works.

Any ideas that I haven't already tried? It really is testing my sanity...

resign yourself to keep putting it back on, straightening it, sorting out the cushions, smoothing over the crumpled bits...it is a full time job.

That's a good idea, littlelapin. I have similar 'issues'. Nobody else in the family can see my problem. Only other women know what I'm on about.

i gave up on normal throws and got one of these instead, work really well, pretty much stays where it's supposed to

I really sympathise - we had the same trouble until we got a new sofa recently. I somehow can sit down nicely and not disturb the throw, and if I do I straighten it when I get up. DP on the other hand must somehow fight with the throw, roll it into a ball and then leave it in a crumpled heap in the corner of the sofa and not even notice!

I found a massive one in Ikea which stayed on a bit better because it reached the floor over the back of the sofa and you could put the feet on the sofa on it IYSWIM.

Now we have a new sofa and I thought my troubles were over, but DP still manages to somehow make the cushions end up in crumpled balls on the floor!

That fitted throw looks like a good plan. Or the HUGE one that Iwouldgoouttonight got from Ikea... hmmm...

Most of all, thanks for the sympathy - you're right, nobody understands

velcro?, although might not be strong enough. I've seen those la redoute ones, look nice, much better idea and you can take them off and wash them.

ha ha ha ha!! with LO's around, no way! These things are high maintenance, like puffing the cushions everyday, you just straighten the throw everyday, or every hour... or whatever.

Just had a thought though. The main seats on our overly large sofa keep sliding off, so I bought some funny rubbery type material that kind of holds the seats/cusions in place. Its not a 100% fix, but works loads better than if they werent there. Maybe you could find some (hardware stores, John Lewis maybe?) and put that under the throw.

Else, no advice, other than I do know what you mean.

Rug tape, the stuff you use to stop them slipping on carpets.

You can buy it in rolls. But a couple of little bits on the back of the throw and stick to the back of the settee.

Should have said, that assumes settee is fabric.

If you have a leather settee, get the rug to hard floor type of tape.

You can't. This is one of the things that ba**d interior designers who don't actually live in the houses they design tell us is a good idea. Like white painted floors and animal print wallpaper.

Rug tape I tell you.

get two throws and sew them together so that the double sized throw is much larger than the settee.

if possible tuck the surplus around and under and in various nooks and crannies of the settee.

worked well for us covering a chintzy floral settee with a modern check patterned chenille mega sized throw.

beware of cats/kittens worming their way underneath the throw before you sit down though (look for little humps under the throw), I think the kitten and I were both mentally scarred for life after that incident.

St George you are a genius, I am going to try that! I have cheap throws covering the landlord's leather sofas to keep them safe from ds.

I know what you mean and sympathise. DH manages to sit down and expose both sofa arms and the back. The throw ends up scrunched up underneath him.

I'm going to try sewing two together now and trapping them under the sofa feet.

Only another woman would understand this.

I am going to buy some rug tape.
