Plagued by flies - help!

I have recently moved from a big fancy house to a small shabby flat after the end of a relationship, so although we (me and 2 young children) won’t be here forever I’m trying to make it as nice as we can.
Since moving in at Easter I have noticed we get LOADS of flies in the flat, and it’s driving me mad! It wasn’t clean when we moved in and I’ve tried to improve that, but it’s not like there’s food laying around to encourage them - currently there are 4 or 5 flies buzzing around the living room and I already caught 4 and slung them out of the window this morning. Any suggestions on why they might be here, or what I can do to get rid of them (short of hardcore fly spray, which I do have…or chasing them with a Tupperware box and chucking them out of the window)? Ideally I’d like to know if there’s something I can do to keep them away, knowing it’s normal to have the odd fly when the windows are open.
i once had a sudden infestation in our old house (about 50 flies appeared in the space of a few hours) after a drain was blocked, but i can’t imagine what’s bringing them all here. Any suggestions?

Check the extractor fan above the hob .

Lots of sticky fly papers work well.

Do you have a fire place? We had a lot of flies, when a baby bird had died in our chimney, we had it capped out so it couldn’t happen again. It was horrible. So many flies.

I would be killing them not chucking them out to come back in.

Get a trap or a fly squat
