Mystery stain removal

I’ve just bought a jacket from a charity shop to wear as part of a fancy dress costume. It’s got quite a big dark stain on the front, but I’ve no idea what it could be.

I’ll try and treat the stain before I put it through the wash but every website I’ve looked at suggests something different - soak in vinegar, rub paste of bicarbonate of soda on, dab with lemon juice… or a combination of all three! It’s very confusing!! What would you try first?

I tend to try washing up liquid in case something is an oil based stain. That usually works well.

Is it washable?

I a very wary of bicarb as I used some on the carpet ( beige and ancient ) I now have an ugly orange stain that I cannot shift even with using a carpet shampooed.

If it looks oily the try a solution of washing up liquid and dab the drain.
Otherwise if its a coffee stain or similar I use Astonish pre wash spray

Does it smell of anywhere?

Anything ( not anywhere)

I second washing up liquid.

I would wash it first and see what happens tbh. Could it be grease though?

MargotMoon · 22/04/2025 17:55

It’s definitely washable - 100% polyester. Doesn’t smell of anything and the stain doesn’t look particularly greasy but I’ll bung a load of washing up liquid on first and see what happens, as that won’t hurt anything. I’ve got a really old bar of Astonish in the back of the cupboard so will try that next.

What's the costume ? (Asking for a friend).....

Washing up liquid worked a charm! Rubbed into the stains and rinsed out then put through a cool wash and it’s come up lovely. Thanks for the help, all :)
