Dirty cleaning cloths

What do you do with them when they’re dirty? I have dirty cloths every day - I don’t want to put them in with my regular clothes wash and it takes ages to have enough to do a wash of just cloths - but where do they stay in the meantime? I use disposable kitchen towels too much because of this.

I just chuck them in the machine whenever they're used and whatever the next wash is goes on top. What's the problem with doing them with clothes? They all get washed and clean.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/03/2025 22:57

We have an old jam pan in the utility room. Used cloths are dropped in there (spread out a bit first to dry if necessary, so they dont go musty) until we have a load.

XMummyTo5X · 30/03/2025 22:58

put em on a quick wash at high temp? or i just chuck them away and buy more tbh. cheap enough to replace.

Beamur · 30/03/2025 22:58

I wash everything together...

@Beamur @DappledThings thats just lazy! dirty cloths should always be washed seperately to clothes!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/03/2025 23:03

I don't wash them with clothes because cleaning cloths need a hot wash and no fabric conditioner. Clothes get a cool wash with fabric conditioner.

LovelyDaaling · 30/03/2025 23:06

I rinse them through in a bucket with some water and a squirt of dishwasher rinse aid liquid (helps the dirt drop off) , wring them out by hand, rinse again, then put them in the clothes wash. In a bucket, it doesn't use much water and is quick to do..

34NotDeadYet · 30/03/2025 23:07

They get washed with towels at 60, bedsheets at a push. I’m doing those at least 1-2x weekly so they don’t build up much

Maitri108 · 30/03/2025 23:07

I wash them with my tea towels and towels as I don't use fabric conditioner.

I agree - I've been doing this for decades and everything comes out looking and smelling clean and it hasn't made me ill so I presume my washing machine has done it's job.

GreenTurtles3 · 30/03/2025 23:23

I put them in a washing up bowl with some hot water, fairy liquid and a splash of bleach. Leave them to soak for a few hours then rinse them through. Voila

My DC have swimming lessons and I dread to think what lurks in the mixed sex changing rooms at our local pool. Their towels go straight in the washing machine at 60°!

But even without the microbial soup from the swimming pool, I think I'd always want to wash the towel that I've been drying my arse with on a hot wash. Poo particles and all that...

Why? Are you washing clean clothes? Are your dirty cloths that dirty that they've been down a sewer?

Clothes dont need fabric conditioner ..nothing needs conditioner, it's all a gimmick 🤦‍♀️

I do this, then after a couple of days just bin it and use a new cloth. I only use in the kitchen

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/03/2025 23:40

I do ours with towels and tea towels at 60. Hang them up to dev overnight when they’ve been used then chuck them in the laundry basket.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/03/2025 23:41

I put them in with towels where I don’t add fabric conditioner.
i dry them before adding to laundry basket.
The point of detergent and a washing machine is to clean everything
Nothing wrong with putting everything in together!!
People are hygiene obsessed these days.

DiscoBeat · 30/03/2025 23:44

I put the kitchen work surface cloths/tea towels in with the towels and the ones I use for mucky jobs (shoes, floor spillages etc) in with the mop heads.

Agree about the conditioner. I don't need to add chemical smells to my clothes. And the 'scent boosters' are a whole new level. People are very gullible.
