Can anyone recommend a good carpet cleaning machine?

Hi everyone

I have had enough of always having dirty carpets. We rent, so really resent paying £100+ every couple of months to clean our carpets professional, only to get dirty a couple of hours later by my kids.

I'm thinking a machine so I can do the job myself and stay on top on it. Any recommendations? It needs to have a good suction function too, so that the carpets don't take all day to dry.

We bought a Bissel Proheat from Amazon this one a couple of months ago, and I am seriously impressed. The carpets are clean, fresh smelling, and take 2 hours to dry. Its also quite light to use.

We bought a VAX Rapide XL, I use it every week on the kitchen carpet. We also private rent (hence a carpet in the kitchen - not my choice), plus we have a dog, a 5 year old and an 18 year old - both who trail mud and dirt in.
It cleans very well, has lots of tools for upholstery and stairs etc, plus dries within a couple of hours. We paid just under £200 for it.

The Bissell Wash and Protect from here - the Scotchguard does seem to be helping to keep the carpets clean too.

Thanks everyone. Just ordered the Bissell online for £188.99 (incl delivery) from electrial123.com.

All the reviews that I found online were pretty positive.

Now, just need to break the news to dh

Don't know if you have a Morrisons anywhere near you but they rent out Rug Doctors at the ones by us. A lot more efficient than the domestic, lightweight carpet cleaners you can buy but if you want to use it frequently it would probably make sense to buy something rather than rent.

Thanks vbacqueen1. Have used Rug Doctors in the past and I don't really think that are worth the rental price.

I'm hoping that frequent cleaning will be more effective and cheaper in the long run.

Of course, dh doesn't agree with me and has the attitude, 'it's not our house so why bother' but I'm the one that has to look at the carpets all day and obsess about them.

we have a bissel proheat II
it is fantastic, was recommended to us by the bloke that cleans our carpets each year

just bumping this in case anyone has other recommendations.
I've just used an ancient VAX for the first time and was impressed with the results but it was very hard work (the fact that one of the steel extension tubes is missing didn't help). So I can either spend £10 buying a new tube or £200 on a new machine. Are the uprights easier to use?

Scrub that, I have found the extension tube, so will have to persevere with antique VAX
