Smelly Tumble Dryer

I have done washing for a friend. Never again. I washed it 3 times as it was v dirty, and all seemed ok. I tumble dried it and it came out smelling of mothballs. I have since read that mildew on clothes can smell this way. I have soaked and re washed with white vinegar and the smell is now gone from the clothes. I have run the washing machine though a couple of times with an old towel and that seems fine.

BUT- my tumble dryer still is leaving things smelling of mothballs. I have tried drying a towel soaked in white vinegar & water, drying a wet towel covered in bicarbonate of soda. I have washed the filters and wiped the whole drum out with various cleaners. It doesn't seem to smell. But fabrics dried in it do.

Any advice anyone? I really don't want a new one as they're all more complicated these days and I love its simplicity! It's a condenser dryer if that makes a difference? Please, help me get rid of this smell!!

You could try putting some essential oil on a cloth and put it in with your clothes or a scented tumble drier sheet. I've found using a nice scent seems to cancel out a musty smell so it doesn't really smell at all after using it.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about essential oils!
