Please recommend me a carpet cleaner

We are thinking of buying a carpet washer as we have combination of old, tired carpets and a variety of cats and a husband who forgets to takes his boots off when he comes in the door. I've been looking at the Vax platinum power max pet design one. Would that be a good choice, or are there any other sensibly priced ones we could bear in mind as well?

All suggestions and advice gratefully received, tia.

I have one. I love it. I offer to clean my families' carpets because I love it so much!

One thing to be aware of is, the vax platinum cleaning fluid is quite expensive so look out for decent alternatives.

@BoredZelda If you live near me you can come round and do mine! Thanks for the tip about the cleaning fluid.

I have a vax. I used it once and it tore comps out of the carpet and soaked it. I’ve never used it again. The Bisell one is supposed to be good.

I'd love to. Are you far from Central Scotland 🤣

I have full sized Vax and a spot cleaner Bissell - both the pet versions (muddy dog). Both clean really well, but I would warn you that it is generally advised that you be ultra cautious washing old tired carpets. To do a good job they need to get deep down, and that can damage the carpet. If you can borrow or hire one to test, it may save you making an expensive mistake.

I bought the Vax Dual Power Pet Advance Upright Carpet Cleaner at the weekend because we have an elderly cat who likes to throw up on a particular rug and I'm sick of hand cleaning it! I'm very, very impressed! Despite being long pile the rug looks like new again and took a lot less time to dry than I thought it would. I might even consider getting more carpet (we have none thanks to previous elderly cats)!

Ah. Well if you hop on the southbound Flying Scotsman, hop off again just as it starts to slow down, and I'll come and find you. Grin

@EmmaMaria Thanks for that info, I might see if I can find a friend who's got one then, and try it out in a corner.

The issue we have is that we're open plan so the same carpet runs through the hall, living room, dining room, all the way up the stairs and round onto the landing. It would be very expensive to replace all that at once, and a logistical mightmare as well, hence thinking about putting it off for a while and trying to revamp the carpet a bit instead. But if there's a chance of making matters worse when cleaning it, we wouldn't want to risk it really.

@SleepingisanArt thanks for that info. I'm considering purchasing the model you have. I keep putting off moving furniture around because the rugs need to be cleaned first

This chap on youtube reviews all hoovers and carpet washers. He runs the same tests so you can literally see the differences. With the carpet washer ones he also measures how much water it takes to fill the tank and compares that to how much comes out of the carpet.

I went with the Rug Doctor one. This link will start a video but the playlist is to the right with all of them. He really is a very knowledgeable chap.
